GAA Integration moves forward in Ulster
The Third Annual Ulster Integration Meeting was held in the Armagh City Hotel on Thursday 29th May.
Director General Pauric Duffy and National Integration Committee Chairman Sean Kelly were present on behalf of the national GAA with National Ladies Gaelic President Geraldine Giles and Ladies Gaelic Football Chief Executive Helen O’Rourke representing the Ladies Gaelic. Catherine O’Hara Vice President of the National Camogie Association and Chairperson of Ulster Camogie Council represented the Camogie Association.
Sean Kelly Chairman of the National Integration Committee announced that the GAA will be following the Ulster Council’s model for Integration and the Central Councils of Camogie, Ladies Gaelic and the GAA will be bringing forward motions to their respective Congresses which will allow for full integration were relevant for clubs. Additionally motions will be brought forward to allow representation for Ladies Gaelic and Camogie on GAA County Boards, Provincial Councils, and Central Council similar to the existing arrangement with Handball. Kelly praised the Ulster Council who has been at the forefront of the Integration process for the last three years.
The proposed outcome of the Integration Process will be:
1) Full integration were appropriate at club level
2) Close cooperation and representation at county level
3) Close cooperation, partnership and representation at provincial level
4) Eventually it is envisaged that a confederation consisting of the GAA, Ladies Gaelic Football Association and Camogie Association will be established allowing the respective organisations to retrain their own identity and governance arrangements while interlinking to one overall umbrella body which will promote all Gaelic Games, Culture and Pastimes.
Tom Daly President of the Ulster Council said
“Integration is vital as the GAA moves forward and the Ulster Council welcomes the announcements on formalising the Integration process by the National Integration Committee which will mirror the existing arrangements already established in Ulster. Over the past three years Ulster GAA has established strong links with both Ulster Camogie and Ulster Ladies Gaelic Football Association and our strong partnership with both bodies is proving to be mutually beneficial for all involved. We have also increased our links with both Hanball and Rounders and look forward to strengthening our partnership with our colleagues in these respective codes over the next year.”

USFC: Flying Fermanagh beat Farney
Ulster SFC Quarter-Final:
Fermanagh 2-8 Monaghan 0-10
Fermanagh celebrated the reopening of Brewster Park with a fully deserved Ulster SFC win over Monaghan.
Liam McBarron’s early goal laid the foundations, and while the Lakelanders lost their way for a spell in the third quarter, a second goal from Ciaran McElroy got them back on track.
Monaghan finished a man short after Gary McQuaid’s frustration earned him a straight red card in the dying moments of a game they will quickly want to forget as they prepare for the Qualifiers.
The Erne men got off to the best possible start when Eamon Maguire’s attempt to fist a point came back off a post, and McBarron finished to the net from close range.
But Monaghan began to get a grip on the midfield area, where they won the majority of breaking ball through Damien Freeman and Paul Finlay, whose searching deliveries to the front line had Fermanagh under pressure.
Conor McManus, Tommy Freeman and Finlay all hit the target as the Farney men narrowed the gap to a point by the 13th minute.
But Fermanagh proved more efficient from a limited amount of attacking possession, with Ciaran McElroy squeezing over a point from an almost impossible angle, before Ryan Keenan converted his second free and Eamon Maguire made it 1-4 to 0-3.
Finlay missed a standard free, while two Freeman efforts came back off the same post as the visitors’ frustration grew.
And they lived dangerously at the back, needing a vital interception from Dessie Mone to prevent McElroy’s pass from reaching McBarron.
McBarron was denied by a superb Shane Duffy save when he latched on to a rebound after Mark Murphy’s shot from distance came back off an upright.
Marty McGrath scored an inspirational point to send Fermanagh in with a 1-5 to 0-4 interval lead, but a more driven Monaghan side began to turn over possession in the early stages of the second half.
They narrowed the gap through Tommy Freeman and midfielder Eoin Lennon, and when Finlay floated over a gem off his famed left foot, a point separated the sides with 12 minutes played in the second half.
McGrath dug deep to try and revive Fermanagh’s flagging challenge, and his colleagues responded, with Mark Little and Keenan, from a free, restoring the three point advantage.
And they struck for a second goal in the 54th minute when Keenan’s cross from the right dropped perfectly for McElroy to punch home at the far post.
When substitute Shane McCabe, who just returned to the squad this week, sliced over a delightful score, Fermanagh were in dreamland, ahead by six points with 12 minutes to play.
McCabe made quite an impact with his darting runs on the left wing, and when Gary McQuaid struck out at the Irish League soccer star, he received a straight red card with three minutes to play.

USHC: London & Derry into Semis
Ulster SHC:
Armagh 4-16 London 2-23
London will meet Down next Sunday in the Ulster SHC semi-final following their dramatic win over Armagh at Newry.
Full forward Martin Finn emerged as the hero of the hour, hitting a glorious 14 points haul that included a dramatic winner from a ‘65′ deep into stoppage time.
The sides were level on eight occasions, before the Exiles finally broke Orchard hearts.
A 1-10 tally from Declan Coulter was not enough to save Mattie Lennon’s side from a dramatic defeat.
The sides were level on three occasions in the opening quarter, with sharpshooters Declan Coulter and London’s Martin Finn making it a head to head shoot-out, both showing deadly accuracy from frees.
The Orchard men made hteir first breakthrough in the 18th minute when Coulter crossed from the left for full forward Conor McCann to drill to the net past a helpless Gary McCollum.
Finn continued to show a deadly eye for goal as the Exiles refused to allow the setback to affect their focus, and they had slipped into a two points lead with a John McCarthy point when Armagh struck for a second goal.
This time it was Fiachra Bradley who found the net, striking past McCollum at the second attempt after the ‘keeper had stopped his initial effort.
Three minutes later the sliothar was in the London net again, Coulter the marksman, and his two long range frees helped the men in orange to a 3-10 to 0-13 interval lead.
Kevin McMullan got in for a London goal six minutes into the second half, and when Finn brought his tally into double figures, the deficit had been cut back from six to two.
With the wind in their backs, London grew in confidence, and further scores from Finn and Conor O’Halloran had them level midway through the half.
They were denied the lead when Joseph Burke produced a wonderful save from Mark Mythen, but Finn’s 13th score did ease them in front with 15 minutes to play.
And when substitute Chris McDonnell banged in a 63rd minute goal, the Exiles were in charge, but there was still time for John Corvan to smash home Armagh’s fourth goal, before Finn floated over the winner from a ‘65′ deep into stoppage time.

Ulster SHC Quarter-Final:
Derry 7-23 Monaghan 3-13
Derry progressed to the semi-finals of the Ulster Senior Hurling Championship with a comprehensive victory over Monaghan at Celtic Park on Sunday.
Monaghan started brightly enough but their hopes of victory took a hammer blow nine minutes in when keeper Michael McHugh dropped a Paddy Henry free into the net.
Henry struck again midway through the first half before another mistake from McHugh gifted Oisin McCloskey a goal. Paddy McCloskey added a fourth to help Derry into a 4-11 to 0-4 lead at the interval.
Derry were not quite as dominant in the second period but Ruairi Convery, Mark Craig and Sam Dodds all helped themselves to further goals for the Oak Leafers.
However, Monaghan, courtesy of a spirited late rally, managed three of their own, with Brian McGuigan, Ronan Conlan and Stephen Lambe all on target.
However, it was Derry who progressed to the semi-finals where they will meet Antrim on June 1.

Ulster Inter-Firms 7’s Blitz
Mc Aleer & Rushe stormed to victory in their inaugural Inter-Firms appearance at the O’Neills/Parador sponsored 7’s Blitz on Saturday 17th May.
In the end it was six teams (Queen’s University, Citigroup, PSNI, Mc Aleer & Rushe, CDE and Belfast City Council) who battled it out in the Cherryvale Playing Fields in Belfast.
In Group 1, Belfast City Council and Mc Aleer & Rushe finished top of their group while Queen’s University and Citigroup topped Group 2, setting up the semi-finals.
The bank officials edged out the council workers in the second half giving a great attacking performance.
In the other semi-final, Mc Aleer & Rushe turned on the football in the early first half. The University staff scored first but failed to score again for another 10 minutes.
Colin Devlin (Ballinderry and Derry) shone in the final scoring 2 goals and went on to win Player of the Tournament.

Johnston inspires Cavan to Victory
Ulster SFC:
Cavan 1-19 Antrim 1-14
Cavan convincingly booked a spot in the Ulster SFC Quarter-Finals, thanks to a five-point victory over Antrim at a sunny Casement Park in Belfast.
A 33rd-minute Dermot McCabe goal set Cavan up nicely for victory but it was a strong performance from full-forward Sean Johnston with eight points which sealed the win.
Another upsetting statistic for Antrim manager Jody Gormley, who sees his Saffron side now play in the Tommy Murphy Cup, will be the 11 wides which his side amassed in the second half, with the bulk of those efforts coming from scorable positions.
Cavan began this game at a lightning pace and led by 0-7 to 1-1 after 20 minutes, following a second point of the contest from full-forward Sean Johnston.
The visitors had led by 0-3 to 0-0 after six and a half minutes, thanks to scores from Dermot McCabe, Jason O’Reilly and Martin Reilly but a goal from Conor McGourty two minutes later for Antrim levelled the contest for the first time.
McGourty’s ninth minute goal was a well placed effort as he slotted to the net, following a precision pass from Paddy Cunningham who caught a high ball in from a Sean Kelly free-kick.
However Cavan settled well, winning a lot of possession in the midfield sector outscoring Antrim by 0-6 to 0-2 over the next 16 minutes, as Cavan took a 0-9 to 1-2 lead, ten minutes before the break.
But Antrim suddenly woke up to the action, and strung together some excellent moves with Tomas McCann latching onto a pass from his brother, midfielder Michael; as the half-forward sent over the Saffrons first point from play in the 28th minute.
This was a good passage for the hosts who equalised, with five minutes remaining before half-time thanks to points from Ciaran Close and goal-scorer McGourty at 1-6 to 0-9.
But McCabe’s 33rd minute goal, following some clever play by Sean Johnston; saw Cavan in the ascension once again, although Paddy Cunningham did get a point back for Antrim, with his third score of the contest; to leave the score at 1-9 to 1-7 at the interval.
Antrim dominated possession in the opening ten minutes of the second half, but despite this they could only manage two points on the scoreboard over this period, as they sent four scorable chances wide of the target.
Just a point continued to separate the sides as the game entered the final 20 minutes, but it was then that Cavan turned on the style, scoring six of the next seven points to lead by 1-17 to 1-11 in the 58th minute.
Sean Johnston was instrumental during this purple patch for the blues, with four glorious points, as he fisted the air in celebration following his seventh point, with 12 minutes remaining.
Antrim failed to give up with Conor McGourty converting his third point with ten and a half minutes remaining.
However Cavan finished strongly to book a quarter-final spot against Armagh on June 15th.

USHC – Wins for Monaghan & London
Ulster SHC 2nd Round:
Monaghan 1-15 Donegal 1-14
Monaghan survived a furious late rally by Donegal at Clones where the Farney men booked their place in the Ulster Senior Hurling Championship quarter-finals with a narrow, one-point win.
The home side had to dig deep in the tense closing stages to survive a late Tir Chonaill comeback, before substitute Pat O’Connor sealed victory with a stoppage time point.
Monaghan were given an early boost when Michael Greaney grabbed a fifth minute goal. He finished to the net with conviction from Stephen Lambe’s delivery, and that score gave the Farney men genuine belief that they could triumph.
With Brian Phelan an unshakeable tower of strength in midfield, the home side grew in confidence as the first half progressed, with Eanna MacSuibhne firing over some sublime long range scores and Stephen Lambe striking accurately from frees.
Donegal struggled to get into the game, but did nick points on the breakaway through Kevin Campbell, Niall Campbell and Barry Friel.
They almost conceded a second goal to Greaney, but Marty McGrath blocked heroically to avert the danger.
Monaghan were six points clear at the interval and further scores from Sean McVeigh, Barrry Friel, O’Brien and substitute Damien Doherty had them well in control.
Donegal needed some inspiration, and they got it when Kevin Campbell drilled a 20-metre free to the net 10 minutes from the end to bring them right back into it.
They reeled off a string of points through Kevin and Niall Campbell, before Sean McVeigh brought them level in the final minute.
It looked like it was set to go to extra-time, but O’Connor’s late strike from wide on the left sealed it for Monaghan.

Ulster SHC 2nd Round:
Tyrone 1-6 London 2-13
Tyrone were no match for a dominant London side at Omagh, where the Exiles swept to a comfortable Ulster SHC win.
First half goals from Stephen Malone and Kevin McMullan laid the foundations for a dominant display by Mick O’Dea’s side in the Healy Park sunshine.
Tyrone made a promising start with early scores from Conor Gallagher and David Lavery, but the Exiles, with Fergus McMahon and Sean Quinn a powerful force in midfield, soon settled to take control of the contest.
They went in front through McMahon, McMullan and Stephen Malone, before Peadar McMahon’s long range strike brought the sides level.
But in the 18th minute, the game turned very much in favour of London when they struck for their first goal, albeit with the help of a touch of good fortune.
Malone sent in a hopeful delivery from the right, which deceived goalkeeper Niall Gallagher and ended in the net.
And when Finn swept over a free, London led comfortably by 2-6 to 0-3 at the interval.
The visitors continued to show their superior class in the second half, and led by 13 points at one stage.
Finn continued to strike accurately from placed balls, and while the Red Hands did enjoy a brief productive spell which yielded excellent scores from Gallagher and Cormac McHugh, there was never a hint that they could drag themselves back into contention.
Finn, McMullan and Conor O’Halloran turned the screw, and Niall Healy and Sean McLoughlin held things tight at the back, until Tyrone finally did grab a late goal, drilled direct to the net from a 20 metre free by Gallagher.
Tyrone: N Gallagher, SP Begley, M Winters, M McElroy, S McKiver, S Donnelly, L Moore, N Hurson, C Gallagher (1-2 , 1-2 frees), D Lavery (0-1), P McMahon (0-1), C McHugh (0-1), P O’Connor (0-1), P Hughes, P Devine.

Antrim & Cavan meet in SFC Opener

Antrim and Cavan will get the 2008 Ulster Senior Football Championship underway in Casement Park on Sunday.
At the beginning of the year, two Divisions separated Antrim and Cavan in the NFL. However, with Cavan being relegated from Division 2, and Antrim coming desperately close to promotion from Division 4, it would suggest that there will be little between the sides on Sunday.

Cavan: J O’Reilly; M Hannon, R Dunne, M Brides; D Sheridan, A Forde, M Cahill; M McDonald, D McCabe; M Reilly, R Flanagan, B Watters; C Mackey, S Johnston, J O’Reilly.
