Championship goes Smoke-Free!

no-smoking-2009.jpgThe Ulster GAA is embarking on an exciting new initiative this weekend to mark World No Tobacco Day.  With up to 35,000 people expected to attend the Ulster Championship match between All Ireland Champions Tyrone and Ulster Champions Armagh, the Provincial Council, in partnership with the Ulster Cancer Foundation and The Office of Tobacco Control, will be launching their Smoke-Free campaign in Clones.

Patrons entering the turnstiles will be greeted by volunteers encouraging them to refrain from smoking whilst inside the ground.  No Smoking memorabilia will be distributed to those wishing to support the campaign, while a visit to the ground by ‘Stubbie the Mascot’ from the Ulster Cancer Foundation is sure to bring further fun to the occasion.

By promoting a Smoke-Free initiative spectators, officials, volunteers and players will be protected from the harm and irritation caused by passive smoking, while at the same time it may discourage young people from starting to smoke, and encourage adults to quit.

Supporters who have attended Championship matches in Clones in recent times will be familiar with the No Smoking regulations in the Gerry Arthurs stand, and now with the support of all patrons, the entire ground will enjoy a Smoke-Free atmosphere!

Recent research by the Office of Tobacco control has found that 9 out of 10 people would support a smoke-free policy in sports stadiums or grounds so it is anticipated that the campaign will be widely supported this Sunday.

Danny Murphy, Ulster GAA secretary stated “As the largest sporting organisation in Ireland we have a responsibly to promote the health benefits of being involved in sport. Through this initiative and the wider Ulster GAA Health and Wellbeing Programme, we are highlighting the benefits of giving up smoking and we are happy to encourage a smoke- free Stadium in Clones for the Armagh and Tyrone Championship Game”

Gerry McElwee from the Ulster Cancer Foundation said “Smoke free sports grounds are popular, healthier and more pleasant for all spectators. In recent years the Ulster Cancer Foundation has worked closely with the Ulster Council on a number of health programmes including Healthy Clubs and the distribution of free sunscreens at championship games. We are delighted to be a partner in this important initiative to ensure a healthier, more comfortable environment for young and old as they enjoy the thrills of the Ulster Championship.”

GAA Programme Fair

ofiaich-prog-fair-2009.jpgOn Saturday 30 May the Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library and Archive, Armagh, will host ‘Clár 2009′, its second annual national Gaelic games programme and collectibles fair.

The previous fair last August, the first of its kind anywhere for GAA memorabilia, proved a great success, with a large number of collectors in attendance. Collectors came from all four provinces to Armagh to exchange and deal over items. The event also provided many collectors with an opportunity to meet each other for the first time.

An even bigger crowd is expected to attend this year’s fair. Surplus items from the library collection as far back as the 1940s will be available for exchange or sale at reasonable prices. There will be no auction element. A range of GAA memorabilia from the early years of the last century will also be on show, as part of the library’s current Ulster GAA history exhibition.

Collectors are encouraged to forward lists of their ‘Wants’ and ‘Spares’ in advance of the fair, and to bring a selection of their spare programmes for exchange on the day.

The event will start at 10.30 a.m. Further information is available for Roddy or Dónal at the library on (048)-37522981.

Derry edge out Farney Men

derry-monaghan-usfc2009.jpgUlster SFC Quarter-Final:
Derry 1-10 Monaghan 0-10

Derry edged Monaghan at Celtic Park on Sunday, just about deserving a narrow win, with Paddy Bradley hitting the only goal of the game in the first half.

Bradley fisted to the net at the far post from Enda Lynn’s cross to give Derry a massive boost in the eighth minute.

Earlier, Stephen Gollogly and Chris McCaigue had swapped points, but Monaghan struggled to make inroads against a well organised Oak Leaf defence in the opening quarter.

But Derry failed to turn their offensive possession into scores, going 27 minutes without hitting the target after Eoin Bradley had shot them into a 1-2 to 0-1 lead on nine minutes.

Monaghan finally began to get some momentum going, after hitting a rash of wides, the worst of these a Tommy Freeman free after full back Vinny Corey had charged forward in a bid to inspire his team-mates.

Freeman then did find the target, along with Raymond Ronaghan, and it was a Paul Finlay free that edged the Farney men back on front on 33 minutes - 0-6 to 1-2.

Paddy Bradley’s free levelled it in first-half stoppage time and the former All-Star edged Derry back in front early in the second half, before laying off for brother Eoin to curl over his second.

The Oak Leafers, now with a strong wind in their backs, should have pressed home the advantage at this stage, but allowed Monaghan to draw level for the fifth time with a Finlay free.

Rory Woods eased the Farney county back in front with a fisted effort, before Derry midfielder Fergal Doherty was dismissed for a second yellow card 12 minutes from the end.

But the 14-man Oak Leafers battled back to go in front with two excellent efforts from debutant James Kielt.

And they sealed a semi-final spot against either Tyrone or Armagh with late scores from Joe Diver and Paddy Bradley.

Monaghan down Oak Leaf Minors

derry-monaghan-umfc2009.jpgUlster GAA MFC Quarter Final:
Monaghan 1-12 Derry 0-10

Shane Coyle’s second-half goal helped Monaghan to a 1-12 to 0-10 victory over Derry in Sunday’s ESB Ulster MFC quarter-final at Celtic Park.

The Oak Leafers surged into a four-point lead but Monaghan hit back with an excellent score from the impressive Aaron McCarey.

Derry were 0-6 to 0-4 ahead at the break but Coyle’s goal brought the sides level at 1-4 to 0-7.

Monaghan then added three unanswered points before sealing the win.

Gritty Fermanagh Erne Win

fermanagh-down-usfc2009.jpgUlster SFC Prelim Round:
Fermanagh 0-13 Down 0-10

The Ulster Championship swung into action with a somewhat unexpected win for Fermanagh over a misfiring Down side at Brewster Park.

True, the Erne men were provincial finalists last season, true, they played in a higher league division than the Mourne men this season.

But this was a game that Down were expected to win, such was the perceived progress made by the respective counties this term.

Fermanagh had big-hearted players who weren’t afraid to show their passion and desire, and in this regard they played their opponents off the park.

Down were a side bereft of direction and strategy, and the manner in which they lost their way in the second half will be a huge worry to manager Ross Carr as he prepares for a trip down Qualifier lane.

Fermanagh made a bright start with points from wing back Tommy McElroy and midfielder James Sherry, both quality efforts from distance.

But the Mourne men were ahead by the 11th minute, when Aidan Carr converted two frees either side of a Benny Coulter point.

A game that was struggling to settle into any kind of patter swung back in Fermanagh’s favour, with Mark Little edging them back in front.

But the lead continued to change hands, Paul McComiskey regaining the advantage, before debutant Daryl Keenan brought the Erne men level.

Fermanagh goalkeeper Chris Breen had to scramble to keep out an innocuous effort from Declan Rooney which dipped towards the far post, but that was as close as either side came to crafting a first half goal.

The home side countered immediately to go back in front through Ryan Carson, but in stoppage time, Stephen Kearney brought the sides level for the sixth time, turning around at 0-7 each.

A renewed flourish in the early stages of the second half saw Down open up a two points lead with the help of a Benny Coulters special, curled beautifully between the posts from way out left.

But solid defending from Shane Lyons and Shane McDermott helped Fermanagh survive a difficult period, and two frees from Ryan Carson had them level before Ciaran McElroy shot them back in front.

Carson tapped over another couple of frees, and there was little resistance from Down, evel less sign of a revival that would rescue their title bid.

And they limped out of the Ulster Championship with just 14 men on the field, Aidan Carr sent off on a straight red card in stoppage time.

Fermanagh Scorers: T McElroy (0-1), M McGrath (0-1), J Sherry (0-2), C McElroy (0-1), M Little (0-1), D Keenan (0-1), R Carson (0-6, 0-5f).

Down Scorers: P Fitzpatrick (0-1), A Carr (0-2, 0-2f), B Coulter (0-2), S Kearney (0-1), D Hughes (0-2), P McComiskey (0-2,0-1f).

Breen shines as Orchard prevail

donegal-armagh-ushc2009.jpgUlster SHC Second Round:
Donegal 2-12 Armagh 3-24

Armagh moved into the quarter-finals of the Ulster SHC after a 15-point win over Donegal in O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny.

Paul Breen scored 1-9 as the Orchard men overcame a five-point first-half deficit before overwhelming the home side in the second period.

Donegal’s hopes were dealt an early blow when centre-back Danny Cullen was ruled out though injury.

Armagh, who enjoyed an easy win over Monaghan last week, raced into an early lead when Paul McCormack scored the first two points of the game.

However, McCormack suffered an injury and was forced off before Ciaran McCreevy added the Orchard’s third.

A Kevin Campbell free got Donegal off the mark, but full-forward  Breen, who struck 0-10 in the win over the Farney County, hit back with two unanswered points to give Armagh a 0-5 to 0-1 advantage.

However, Donegal turned the game on its head in a four-minute spell. Minor star Ciaran Matheson grabbed the first goal of the game after 14 minutes when he took a clever Kevin Campbell pass and drive home.

Lee Henderson was then on hand to add a second goal soon after to give Donegal a 2-3 to 0-6 lead. Kevin and Niall Campbell added further scores to leave Donegal well in command.

However, Armagh edged back into the game and were on level terms just before the break when Cathal Campbell found the net, leaving the score at 2-6 to 1-9 at half-time.

The second half lacked the intensity of the first 35 minutes, and Donegal were guilty of giving away far too many frees which Breen slotted over with ease to leave Armagh 1-17 to 2-11 ahead with 14 minutes left on the clock.

Breen scored the Orchard men’s second goal with three minutes left after Cathal Campbell had set him up.

It got worse for Donegal as Joe Boyle was sent off for a second yellow card offence and Andy Carvill added a third goal in added time to leave 15 points between the sides.  Armagh will meet Down in the quarter-final.

Crowds gather for Lá na gClub

la-na-gclub.jpgOver 140,000 GAA members across Ulster celebrated Lá na gClub at their local GAA clubs on Sunday 10th May as part of the GAA 125th Anniversary Celebrations.

The Ulster Council’s 125 celebrations have been firmly focused on the Clubs and Volunteers and the Council provided each of Ulster’s 580 clubs with a special 125 pack which included guidance on Lá na gClub and special GAA 125 Flag which was flown at all clubs on Sunday.

President of Ulster GAA Tom Daly was delighted with the response of the Ulster Clubs, he said, “I spent the day at my own club Aodh Ruadh CLG Ballyshannon and was honoured to raise the 125 flag at our new clubs grounds which will be officially opened on the 29th May as part of the Club Centenary Celebrations. My club had over 400 people proudly celebrating their membership of the GAA and I am delighted and overwhelmed that this was replicated across Ulster where our clubs where well informed and well equipped to celebrate Lá na gClub.  I am very thankful to the club volunteers who continue to do sterling work in their Clubs which are the most important unit of the GAA. I would also recognise the members of Ulster GAA 125 Committee who have done outstanding work since August 2008 in organising the Ulster 125 Calendar of events.”

The Ulster Council launched a programme of 125 events in February including the very successful GAA 125 History Conference organised in Partnership with the O’Fiach Library in Armagh, which included keynote speeches from President Mary McAleese, Cardinal Seán Brady, former GAA President Peter Quinn, Tyrone Manager Mickey Harte and former Down County Secretary Dr. Maurce Hayes.  As well as promoting a special 125 Ulster Championship the Council have organised series of events for the rest of 2009 which can been viewed on the Ulster Council web-site www.ulster.gaa.ie

GAA members are encouraged to log on to the GAA 125 Ulster “micro-site” ulster.gaa.ie/community/125/. Clubs officials are also encouraged to submit reports, photos and video clips of their Lá na gClub which will included in the Ulster GAA 125 site and the Ulster GAA 125 publication due for release in December.

U-15 Development Squad Blitz

dev-squad-blitz-09052009.jpgOn Saturday past the Ulster Council held their 2nd Development Squad Football Blitz of the year leading on from the 125 Blitz which took place 2 weeks ago involving all 9 Counties at U-17 level.

Saturday past was the chance for the U-15 County Development Squads to show their worth.

Each County fielded 2 Teams (15 a side) so in total there were 18 Teams taking part with a total of 340 players enjoying the experience of playing for their County.

With the Counties drawn into 2 Groups there were a total of 32 games played during the day.

Both Teams from each County played at the same time to ensure all players were involved.

A special thanks to Emmett (Caretaker of Cloghan, Training grounds for Monaghan) for  the use of their facilities at very short notice as Owenbeg (Dungiven) was unplayable.

The pitches(4) and facilities are a credit to Emmett and everyone  involved at looking after this unbelievable complex.
