Ulster ‘Foundation Day’ Celebrations

125-balloon-launch.jpgUlster GAA has marked the GAA’s Foundation Day with a day of celebration in Market Square, Armagh City.  The pinnacle of the day’s commemorations was when Ulster GAA President Tom Daly and 10 children from St Malachy’s Primary School in Armagh released 125 black and amber balloons.

Ulster GAA President Tom Daly said, “125 years ago on the 1st November the GAA was founded by a group of visionary men in Thurles.  Today we celebrate that day and celebrate the many successes of the Association since that date.  The GAA has grown and developed into one of the greatest sporting organisations in the world and we are all proud to be part of that.

“Today 10 children from St Malachy’s Primary School symbolise the nine counties of Ulster, they also symbolise the younger generation who will carry the GAA into the next 125 years.”

Continuing Tom Daly said, “To Mark the 125th Anniversary of the GAA the Ulster Council have organised a series of events which will commence on GAA Foundation Day on Sunday November 1st and continue right up the Ulster GAA Irish News Club and Volunteer Conference on Saturday November 14th.

“This is a special time to celebrate the successes of our Association as well as remembering all of those volunteer members who worked tirelessly to build Ireland’s largest sporting, cultural and community movement.

“GAA Clubs across Ulster are asked to fly their 125 flag from 1st November-14th November to mark the GAA’s 125th Anniversary, and we are also encouraging clubs to hold a special meeting on Sunday 1st November to mark Foundation day which may be followed by a religious service or social event.

“Congratulations to all GAA members across Ulster; it is you that make the GAA both strong and successful, we appreciate your continued efforts and we are proud to be alongside you and all the members of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael throughout the world as we celebrate this part of the GAA’s journey. ”

A large crowd of Gaels gathered for the celebrations including Minister Margaret Ritchie, Minister Conor Murphy, Mayor of Armagh City and District Thomas O’Hanlon, and Dean Patrick Rooke.

The 10 children from St Malachy’s Primary School were joined by their parents and teacher Paul Duggan, Secretary of National Cumann Bun Scoil.  Each child wore one of the nine county jerseys and one child wore the Ulster jersey, which they got to keep as a ‘keep-sake’ of the important anniversary.

A list of 125 events planned can be viewed at: http://ulster.gaa.ie/newsletter/2009/10/125/oct2009-125.html

Ulster Club Hurling Finals Round-Up

dunloy-club-shc-2009.jpgUlster Club Senior Hurling Championship Final:
Dunloy (Antrim) 2-16  Ballycran (Down) 2-11

Antrim’s Dunloy won the AIB Ulster Club Hurling Championship for the tenth time as they saw off Down’s Ballycran by 2-16 to 2-11 at Casement Park on Sunday.

Simon Wilson scored an early point against the breeze for Ballycran but it proved not to be a sign of things to come as they were quickly five points behind.

Dunloy led 0-8 to 0-4 coming up to the break as their dominance continued, two more Wilson points and one from Conor Arthurs all the Down men had to show for their efforts. However, Aidan Clarke salvaged a goal just before the break for Ballycran as he fired past Gareth McGhee at the Dunloy goalkeeper’s near post.

Points from Arthurs, Wilson and Conor Woods then put Ballycran ahead, only for the Antrim men to restore their lead with a Paddy Richmond goal, the Saffron County attacker collecting a long ball from McGhee before raising the green flag.

Poor goalkeeping allowed Wilson to score a second goal for Ballycran from distance, but Sean Dowds quickly got Dunloy’s second as his sideline ball caught out goalkeeper Declan Ennis and went in off the underside of the bar. From there his side held on to seal the Ulster throne.

Ulster Club Intermediate Hurling Championship Final:
St Galls (Antrim) 5-11  Middletown (Armagh) 0-12

Antrim champions St Galls strolled to a 14 point victory over Armagh’s Middletown in Pairc Esler on Sunday,

Sean McAreavey was the hero for the Belfast men, scoring 4-04 of his sides total, with the 4 goals coming in a 10 minute spell to effectively end the challenge of the Armagh men.

This was St Galls first Ulster Hurling Championship title, and is even more significant given the fact that a lot of the players are also involved in the St Galls football panel, who are also playing in the Ulster Senior Football Championship.

Ulster Club Junior Hurling Championship Final:
Rasharkin (Antrim) 2-14  Naomh Colum Cille (Tyrone) 4-10

In the curtain raiser to the Senior Hurling final at Casement Park, Naomh Colum Cille clinched their first Ulster Junior Hurling Championship title thanks to a Paul O’Neill goal 2 minutes from full time.

Rasharkin had held a 1-07 to 1-06 lead at half time thanks to a Darren O’Boyle goal, with Seamy Hagan raising the green flag for Naomh Colum Cille.

The second half continued to be a nip-and-tuck affair, with Rasharkin claiming another goal through Diarmaid Quinn, and Paul O’Neill and Niall O’Neill (penalty) hitting the net for the Tyrone champions.

Rasharkin looked to have sealed the victory as they edged a point in front with time running out, however Naomh Colum Cille full forward Paul O’Neill scored the decisive goal in the dying minutes to spark glorious celebrations for the Tyrone men.

Ulster to face Munster in London

ulster-leinster-2009.jpgUlster and Munster will face off in the final of the M Donnelly Inteprovincial SFC in November after both won their semi-finals on Saturday.

Ulstar staged a sensational second-half comeback to book their place in the final after a 1-14 to 1-10 semi-final win over Leinster.

Playing with the wind, Joe Kernan’s side scored 12 unanswered points in the second half after they had gone in seven points adrift at the break.

Kernan’s men started the better in the Armagh venue with an early goal scored by Joe McMahon. Benny Coulter and Paul Finlay were involved in the build-up before the Tyrone man tucked the ball past Westmeath goalkeeper Gary Connaughton.

However, rather than let that great start boost them, Ulster found themselves completely overran for the remainder of the first half as Leinster took advantage of playing with the breeze and confidently started to fire over the scores.

John O’Loughlin, Joe Sheridan, Denis Glennon and Bernard Brogan all raised the white flag before a brief respite for Ulster from the Young Footballer of the Year, Donegal’s Michael Murphy. However, that was Ulster’s last point until just before half-time and Paul Flynn quickly cancelled it out.

Dublin U21 star Dean Rock, the son of the great Barney, then hit three points without reply and Paul Caffrey’s men were seven clear when Rock set up Meath man Sheridan to slam the ball to the back of John Devine’s net.

Rock and Paddy Bradley then traded scores as the visitors went in at half-time with a very healthy lead of 1-9 to 1-2.

The second half began with another Leinster score as Sheridan tagged over a fine free against the wind.

However, that finally seemed to stir Kernan’s troops into action and they kick-started a breathtaking response with Bradley’s second score of the day from out on the sideline. Finlay, Coulter and Kevin Hughes all then hit efforts over the bar to cut the gap to four points 13 minutes into the second period, Leinster still ahead on a score of 1-10 to 1-6.

Bradley then got his third before the excellent Conor Gormley reduced Ulster arrears to just two, Gormley and Hughes now having a huge command in the way the game was going.

And that way was Ulster’s as Bradley and sub Danny Hughes levelled the game at 1-10 apiece with five minutes left to play.

Leinster were stunned and it got worse for them as Ulster did not relent, going in front for the first time since early in the first half and racing clear, Bradley hitting two more with Hughes and Aaron Kernan also knocking over as the home side ensured their advancement to the Ruislip final next month.

As for Munster, Ger O’Sullivan’s men downed Connacht just, by 1-13 to 1-10.

Munster’s Cork men were to the fore as they edged their western counterparts, Paddy Kelly, Donncha O’Conner and Colm O’Neill all scoring early points

Sligo’s David Kelly rammed in a penalty after his initial effert was saved by Tipperary’s Pat Fitzgerald, but for Munster, the talented Kelly tagged on a point and O’Connor pointed two more, followed by another brace from Waterford’s Gary Hurney.

With half-time approaching Limerick’s Pa Ranahan ensured Munster were well on top as he blasted past Mayo custodian David Clarke to ensure a 1-9 to 1-3 lead at the interval.

Peadar Gardiner had the first point for Connacht on the resumption but a pointed free from O’Neill and a Liam O’Lionnain effort had Munster seven points clear and they had a relatively untroubled path through to the final.

Ulster SFC 2010 Draw

anglo-celt.jpgOnce again the Ulster Senior Football Championship draw has served up some mouth-watering encounters.

In the preliminary round, Derry will play Armagh with the winners facing Monaghan in the quarter finals.  Derry were beaten in the Ulster semi-final by Tyrone last year, while new Armagh manager Paddy O’Rourke will be keen to get off to a winning start with his new squad.  Monaghan manager Seamus McEnaney will have to wait in the wings to see if his team will face neighbours Armagh or the team that put Monaghan out of the Ulster Championship in 2009, Derry.

In the first quarter-final, its a repeat of the Ulster Final of 2009 as Antrim face Tyrone.  Antrim manager Liam Bradley will hope to continue his progress with the Saffrons and take out the reigning Ulster champions, while no doubt Mickey Harte will once again be meticulously plotting his way through the field already.

In the second quarter-final, Donegal will face Down.  This is also an intriguing encounter as both sides will be anxious to get a victory having both been beaten in the opening rounds of last year’s Ulster Championship at the hands of Antrim and Cavan respectively.

Finally, Cavan will face off against Fermanagh in what is a repeat of last year’s Ulster quarter-final.  On that occasion, after having beaten Down in the preliminary round, Fermanagh succumed to the Breffni blues.  No doubt the Erne men will be keen to exact revenge this time round.

The dates and venues for the opening rounds of the Ulster Senior Football Championship will be confirmed by the Ulster Competitions Control Committee at a later date.

Ulster Senior Football Championship 2010:

Preliminary Round:
Derry v Armagh

Quarter Finals:
Antrim v Tyrone

Cavan v Fermanagh
Monaghan v Derry / Armagh

Semi Finals:

Cavan / Fermanagh v Monaghan / Derry / Armagh

The draw for the 2010 Leinster Senior Hurling Championship also took place, and following Antrim’s defeat in the opening round to Dublin in 2009, the Saffrons will face an equally difficult tie next year against Offaly.

Leinster Senior Hurling Championship Draw:

Preliminary Round:
Carlow v Laois

Quarter Finals:
Dublin v Prelim Winners
Wexford v Galway
Antrim v Offaly

Semi Finals:
Dublin / Prelim Winners v Kilkenny

Club Hurling Finals Preview

club-hurling-finals-091.jpgThis weekend’s Ulster Club Senior Hurling Final brings together Dunloy of Antrim and Ballycran of Down for the first time in the Provincial decider since 1995 when the Antrim champions ran out winners on a 2-18 to 0-09 score line.

Ballycran have won the title twice, in 1976 and 1993, but have been beaten finalists on five occasions.  Dunloy won their first title in 1990 and since then they have never been beaten in an Ulster final, winning nine titles to date, including four in a row between 2000 and 2003.

Today’s meeting will see Dunloy starting as slight favourites having defeated last year’s champions Ruairi Og Cushendall in the Antrim Final.  Few would have anticipated that victory as Dunloy struggled to overcome challenges from Glenariffe and Ballycastle en route to the Antrim final.  However a dominant performance, particularly from goalkeeper Gareth McGhee and some of the more experienced members of the team, led to a comfortable 3-14 to 1-13 victory.  McGhee scored a penalty and pulled off several excellent saves while Liam and Paddy Richmond, Gregory O’Kane and Malachy Molloy turned in superb performances to oust the reigning Antrim and Ulster champions.

Ballycran on the other hand had to put in a mighty performance to overthrow Ballygalget in the Down final.  Ballycran have been rebuilding over the past number of years after a highly successful run at underage level.  Team manager Eamonn Blaney has developed a very young panel, which is complimented by the experience of Simon Wilson, Gary Savage and Mick Braniff.  However, this may be a year or two too early for this squad who will surely have a bright future if they continue to make progress at the rate they have done so far.

A close encounter can be expected with Dunloy probably continuing their winning ways in Ulster Club Championship finals.

The Intermediate final which takes place in Pairc Esler, Newry brings together two teams that will be contesting their first ever Provincial Hurling final.  Although better known for their football exploits St Galls will be no pushover and can boast three Antrim County stars in Karl Stewart, Kieran McGourty and Conor McGourty.  Armagh champions, Middletown will look to Cathal Carville, Ryan Gaffney and Kieran McKernan for inspiration.  A tough one to call but the Armagh men may just claim their first Provincial title at Intermediate level.

The curtain raiser to the senior decider in Casement Park sees the Junior final between two new finalists with Naomh Colum Cille from Tyrone facing St Mary’s, Rasharkin from Antrim.  Ironically both teams were beaten at the semi final stage of Division 3 of the Ulster Senior Club Hurling League but have now battled on to win their county titles and now contest their first Provincial final.  This will be a close encounter with the Antrim men starting as slight favourites.

He is joined in the team by O’Neill county goalkeeper John Devine, full back Justin McMahon, left wing back Davy Harte, veteran midfielder Kevin Hughes and fellow forward Joe McMahon.

Donegal sharpshooter Michael Murphy, fresh from being named as Young Footballer of the Year, will start alongside O’Neill at top of the left. Ace free-taker Paul Finlay represents the Farney men at right half forward with Erne county star Ryan McCluskey at right corner back.

Derry, Armagh and Down all have two players though. Gerard O’Kane at number four and lethal finisher Paddy Bradley in the full forward line are the Oak Leaf men in the team, with the manager’s son Aaron Kernan and Ciarán McKeever in for the Orchard County and Down midfielder Dan Gordon and centre forward Benny Coulter completing the team.

Galls progress after Extra Time

cj-mcgourty.jpgAIB Ulster Club Senior Football Championship Prelim Rd:
Cavan Gaels 1-10  St Galls 1-12 (AET)

Antrim’s St Gall’s made it into the quarter-final of the Ulster Club Senior Football Championship on Sunday but only just as they needed extra-time to see off the challenge of Cavan champions Cavan Gaels on a score of 1-12 to 1-10.

The men from the Breffni County had beaten St Gall’s at the quarter-final stage of last year’s provincial competition leaving the Antrim men hungry for revenge, but they came close to being left with empty stomachs again at Kingspan Breffni Park before eventually progressing.

After an even beginning, Cavan Gaels quickly went into the ascendancy and it looked like they might get one over on the Antrim side once again. Nicholas Walsh, who had been a doubt for the game with a hamstring problem, moved to leave St Gall’s hamstrung with the game’s opening goal.

That helped Gaels to a four-point lead at half-time as they went in 1-3 to 0-2 ahead but a strong Gall’s side came roaring back after the break and Gaels were not helped by losing a man in the second half.

Gaels had gone six points clear after the break but it all started to unfold and Lenny Harbinson’s men pounced to force the extra-time. The Cavan men had Eamon Reilly sent off and CJ McGourty rammed home a penalty to leave Gaels deflated as the regulation time ended with the score at 1-7 apiece.

Gaels’ full compliment was restored to 15 for the extra period, but unfortunately it did not stay that way as Anthony Forde, Walsh and Karl Crotty were also sent off.

With the advantage of extra men Gall’s just made it over the line, their five extra-time points guiding them into a provincial quarter-final against Pearse Og, who won the Armagh Club SFC with a win over Armagh Harps on Sunday.

Murphy becomes 6th Ulster Winner

michael-murphy-ypoty.jpgMichael Murphy has become the latest player from Ulster to win the coveted title of Young Footballer of the Year.

Michael received his award from President of Ireland Mary McAleese at the Vodafone GAA All-Star Awards on Friday night, and in doing so, he became the 6th Ulster player to win the award since its inception in 1997.

In 2001 the late Cormac McAnallen became the first Ulster recipient and started a run of 5 Ulster players in a row to collect it.

Following Armagh’s historical first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 2002, Ronan Clarke was named Young Footballer of the Year. This was mirrored by Sean Cavanagh the following year as Tyrone lifted Sam for the first time.

In 2004, Fermanagh were the fairytale story of the Championship as they stormed to an All-Ireland semi-final, only to be narrowly beaten by Mayo after a replay. In recognition of his performances, Niall Tinney kept the run of Ulster winners going.

Aaron Kernan became the 5th Ulster player in a row to collect the gong as his sterling performances helped Armagh lift the Ulster Championship, before succumbing to eventual All-Ireland Champions Tyrone in a memorable All-Ireland semi-final.

Pictured is Michael receiving his award from President of Ireland Mary McAleese, GAA President Christy Cooney and CEO of Vodafone Ireland Charles Butterworth.

Victoria College all set for Camogie

victoria-college-camogie-gear.jpgUlster GAA has presented Victoria College, Belfast with a full set of Camogie sticks, sliothars and helmets in advance of their first training session this week.

Speaking on a visit to the school, Ulster GAA’s PRO Michael Hasson said, “It is a great pleasure to visit Victoria College and to bring with me a set of Camogie sticks, sliothars and helmets to help the school set up their very first Camogie team.

“Ulster GAA coaches have been in coaching Gaelic Football to the girls at Victoria College for some time and it is a great achievement for the school now to offer Camogie Coaching to their students as well.

“Ulster GAA is delighted to work in partnership with the school to help bring Gaelic Games to those from non-GAA backgrounds.  I commend Ms Slevin and her staff, the students participating and their families – without their support this could simply not happen.

“The initiative has been hugely successful with many girls showing a good interest in Gaelic Games.  I hope that enthusiasm will continue to grow within the College and that this initiative will be rolled out across other schools in Ulster.”

Victoria College Principal Ms Slevin said, “‘The College is delighted to receive this very generous gift from the Ulster GAA. The girls are really enthusiastic about the forthcoming Camogie coaching and it is a tremendous boost to have this equipment provided for us.”
