Monaghan advance in Electric Ireland Ulster Minor Football Championship

April 22nd, 2019

Monaghan advanced to the next round of the Electric Ireland Ulster Minor Football Championship on Saturday evening thanks to a 1-13 to 1-10 victory over Down in Clones.

The 2018 champions, Monaghan, dominated the opening minutes of the game and raced into a three point lead before Down pegged them back to leave the sides level after 20 minutes at 0-3 apiece.

Monaghan’s Jason Irwin and Down’s Sean Óg McCusker traded points before a late Ryan McGill point gave the Mourne men the half time advantage.

It was nip and tuck for the opening ten minutes of the second half with both sides trading scores and the lead before an Adam Crimmins goal gave Down a two point advantage.

A John McGovern free and a Crimmins point had Down four points to the good midway through the second half.

Monaghan fought back however and ourscored Down 1-5 to 0-1 over the closing 15 minutes, Tiarnan Kierans scoring the goal to book themselves a date with Antrim in the next round. Down will move into the qualifiers.
