Irish-Medium Sports Day
Ulster Council GAA, in cooperation with Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta, is hosting a sports day for Irish-medium school children at Stormont Sports Pavilion on Wednesday 11th June 2008 from 10:30am to 1:15pm.
Around 140 pupils from 13 of the north’s 32 Irish-medium primary schools will be participating in the event. A number of local politicians including Basil McCrea, (UUP) Dominic Bradley (SDLP), Kieran McCarthy (Alliance) and Francie Brolly (SF) will also be attending, as well as Ulster Council GAA President Tom Daly, Director Danny Murphy and Director of Coaching and Games Development Dr. Eugene Young.
The sports day will comprise of a series of seven aside Gaelic football games and will involve an awards ceremony from 12:45pm – 1:15pm.
According to Seán Ó Coinn, CEO of Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta “this is a highly significant event in that it demonstrates the broad appeal of Irish-medium education, the desire of the Irish-medium schools’ sector to be part of mainstream education and life here”. The Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta CEO went on to state that “this event represents an important milestone in the developing partnership between the GAA in Ulster and the Irish-medium schools sector”.
Danny Murphy Provincial Director Ulster Council GAA said: “The Comhairle Uladh CLG is delighted to be able to promote our games through the medium of Irish in conjunction with Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta. Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta play an important role in the delivery of the Irish language which is vital objective of CLG, we hope that today’s event will be the establishment of an important link and mutually beneficial relationship”
The venture is a joint one between Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta and the Ulster Council and it is hoped that it will herald increasing levels of partnership between the two organisations.
