January 19th, 2009

antrim-laois-walshcup2009.jpgWalsh Cup holders Antrim made a successful start to their defence of the Walsh Cup following a 1-13 to 0-14 win over Laois in Rathdowney.

At half time Antrim trailed by 2 points, 0-9 to 0-7, however with the wind in their backs in the second half they turned the tables to run out 2 point winners.

Midfielder Brendan Herron got the decisive goal for the Saffrons as his sideline cut was misjudged by the Laois goalkeeper and nestled into the net.

Paul Shields certainly made light of the heavy conditions as he notched 7 points from placed balls.

Antrim will now face Kilkenny in the Semi-Finals, after the Cats ran out 6-12 to 0-12 winners over Dublin.
