Derry secure Final place
There were wins for Derry, Fermanagh and Tyrone over the course of the weekend in the Barrett Sports Lighting Dr. McKenna Cup.
Two goals were the difference for Derry as they booked their spot in the McKenna Cup final with a hard earned victory over Antrim in Celtic Park on Saturday night on a score-line of 2-14 to 0-14.
First half goals from Paddy Bradley and Sean Leo McGoldrick had the Oak Leaf county well on their way to the competitions decider and they will be joined there by the winners of Cavan and Tyrone who will meet in the other semi-final.
Tyrone continued their impressive start to the season with a 1-18 to 2-12 win over UUJ at home on Saturday night.
In a keenly contested first half Tyrone were ahead by just one point at the break after Tyrone native Matthew Donnelly netted a goal for the students but Tyrone regained their composure in the second half and didn’t panic when Caolan O’Boyle grabbed a second for the Sigerson Cup hopefuls. Brian McGuigan scored Tyrone’s only goal as Mickey Harte’s men topped their group with three wins from as many games.
Elsewhere, defending champions Donegal missed out on the chance to qualify for the semi-final of the competition as the best runner-up when they slipped to a disappointing 0-12 to 0-7 defeat to Fermanagh.
