Derry Primary Schools take part in GAA events

Derry Primary Schools Championship

On Thursday 16th June the Derry Primary Schools championships were held in Owenbeg. 9 schools in all took part: St Canices Dungiven, St Canices Feeny, St Peters and St Pauls Foreglen, St Johns Coleraine, St Johns Swatragh, St Patricks Glen, St Brigids Tirkane, St Brigids Mayogall, St Marys Draperstown

The day was a great success with a good standard of hurling on show. There were 2 separate competitions taking place on the day, a 5-a-side comp (B section) and a 7-a-side comp (A section). St Canices Dungiven and St Johns Swatragh reached the final of both sections. In the A section final Swatragh were 2 point winners over Dungiven whilst Dungiven ensured both schools had something to cheer about by winning the B section. Congratulations to the winning teams and to all the schools who took part in the tournament. Special thanks must go to the pupils from St Patricks College Dungiven who refereed during the group sections of the competition. Well done to all the coaching and games staff that helped to make the day a success.

Go Games Hurling Festival

On Saturday 18th June Derry held their second Go Games hurling festival of the season in Owenbeg. Again there was had a great turnout with 15 clubs and over 400 children from 3 Counties taking part in the days hurling. The standard of hurling was very high with some outstanding individual talent on display. All this bodes well for the future of hurling in this area. Well done to all the clubs who took part in the blitz and for all their continued hard work in promoting and developing hurling in their clubs. Shauna McCallion and Kevin Hinphey co-ordinated and supervised the event. The clubs that took part are listed below:

Annual Year 8/9 Coaching Day

This Month Derry ran their annual year 8 and year 9 hurling coaching days in Owenbeg. The days were a great success with over 100 lads from 5 schools taking part over the two days. On the 1st June we had the year 8 day with St.Patricks College Maghera, St Marys Clady, St.Pauls Kilrea and St.Josephs Coleraine all taking part whilst on the 15th June Loretto College, Coleraine and St.Pauls Kilrea took part in the year 9 day.

The lads received coaching from the Ulster Councils Hurling Development coaches Ronan McWilliams, Kevin Kelly, Mickey Glover and Kevin Hinphey. All were welcome from beginners to some of the top young hurlers in the County and everyone enjoyed their days hurling. Many thanks must go to the schools and teachers for supporting the events.
