Planning for Campa Chormaic well underway

June 3rd, 2011

It is seven years now since the passing of Cormac McAnallen, a giant of a man who always give of his best. Campa Chormaic has been established in his honour, so that his name will live on and to promote the ideals with which he lived his life so diligently; love for his country, love for the language and Gaelic Heritage and especially for Gaelic Games.

Planning is now well underway for the seventh year of Campa Chormaic, which is a summer camp for young people aged between 9 and 16 years old which comprises of Irish Language classes in the morning and Gaelic Games training sessions in the afternoon.

“We started in 2005,” said the Chairman of Campa Chormaic, Conall Ó Máirtín, “and to tell you the truth we didn’t know what was in front of us or what direction the camp would take. All we knew is that we wanted to create a permanent memorial or living memorial in honour of Cormac. Cormac believed strongly in the ideals of the founding fathers of the GAA, the importance of the language and the importance of our native games – it is our aim in Campa Chormaic to promote the same ideals among young people in an inspiring, enjoyable way.

The committee of Campa Chormaic is very proud of the development of Campa Chormaic and the success of Campa Chormaic to counties Antrim and Derry in 2010. Children in the province of Ulster now have the opportunity to attend Campa Chormaic where ever they are in the province.

The committee of Campa Chormaic is extremely grateful to the help received from various different groups but especially Foras na Gaeilge who have helped Campa Chormaic since its inception and who have worked to support Campa Chormaic.

The committee of Campa Chormaic is indebted to the county Boards in each of the counties who have been supportive with the development of Campa Chormaic.

Campa Chormaic would not be able to survive if it were not for the support of our generous sponsors who year after year provide support to the Camp. We are very proud of our long standing relationship with JB Barretts Concrete, H and A Builders and to the support of Fearghal McCormack and his newry company FPM. Campa Chormaic has also been very generously supported by private individuals who knew played with, grew up with or knew of Cormac.

The growth of Campa Chormaic over the years would not have been possible without the support of the schools and GAA clubs who host Campa Chormaic and who year after year open up their facilities.

Campa Chormaic is very proud of its link with the Ulster Council of the GAA who provide much needed support to Campa Chormaic and who have been integral in helping Campa Chormaic to develop from a one county Camp to one that now covers four counties and caters for hundreds of young Gaels each summer.
