North West U12 Indoor Hurling Comp

March 1st, 2012

During the month of February clubs from Derry, Donegal and Tyrone took part in the North West Indoor hurling competition for under 12s.

The first two weeks of the competition took place on the the 12th and 19th of February and were grading weeks for the finals on the 26th.  Fourteen clubs in all took part with most clubs entering a team in the A section and the B section.

The clubs that took part were: Kevin Lynchs, St. Eunans Letterkenny, Slaughtneil, Banagher, Letterkenny Gaels, Muff, Na Magha, Dungloe/ Gaoth Dobhair, Carndonagh, Coleraine, Burt, Buncrana, Ballinascreen and Strabane.

The game played is indoor airborne hurling where teams score by striking the ball against the basketball backboards at either side of the hall. The game is excellent for developing players tackling and for getting players to think and play faster due to having less room inside the sports halls. Catching skills are also rewarded with players scoring points for high fielding.

In the final round each team played each other once in a mini league format with the top team at the end of the round of games winners of that division. Following the grading weeks of the competition the line up for the finals were as follows:

This was the third year of the completion and the standard of hurling this year was very good with more clubs reaching a higher standard that in any of the previous years of the competition. There was also some excellent individual talent on display.

The winners of the respective divisions were:

Section A Division 1         Na Magha
Section A Division 2         Coleraine
Section A Division 3         Strabane
Section B Division 1         Ballinascreen
Section B Division 2         Banagher

A special mention must go to the Na Magha team for winning the top section of the competition, they were deserving winners and played some great hurling on the day. A special thanks must go to Donal McLaughlin, Neil Crossan, Martin McGrath, Shauna McCallion, Ashlene Kealey, Paul Simpson and Emmet Stewart for supervising and refereeing at the various venues over the course of the competition. Well done to all the clubs who took part we hope to see them over the summer taking part in the outdoor go games programme.
