Cavan retain U21 Title
Cadbury Ulster U21 Football Championship Final:
Cavan 1-10 Tyrone 0-10
Cavan retained their Cadbury GAA Football Ulster U21 Championship crown with an impressive 1-10 to 0-10 victory over Tyrone at Brewster Park on Wednesday night.
The Breffni men got the first score of the game through Darragh Sexton’s early penalty, and although Tyrone were level on a few occasions with their opponents, they never managed to gain the lead and Cavan took full advantage of their buffer as they saw out the win.
Cavan led 1-4 to 0-5 at half-time with Kevin Tierney (0-3) and Jack Brady getting their points from frees. As their goal had come from the penalty spot, it meant all their first half scores came from placed balls.
Tyrone had shown more fluidity in attack in the first half with Stefan Tierney, Richard Donnelly and Darren McCurry all kicking fine scores, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Cavan leading at the break.
McCurry’s early point reduced the gap to one after the interval, but Cavan improved markedly in the second half and led by four with 15 minutes to go after points from Tierney, Brady and Joe Dillon.
Tyrone looked rattled and when Cavan went five ahead with 10 minutes left, the writing was on the wall.
The Red Hand County managed to get to within a goal after late points from Niall Sludden and Thomas Canavan, but Cavan were not to be denied and they eased to their three-point victory in the end.
