Derry Hurling 7s Tournament
During the last week in June, Derry hosted their annual 7-a-side hurling tournaments for under 14s and under 16s. The under 14 competition was hosted in Claudy GAA with their 3G playing facility an ideal venue for small sided games.
There was an ‘A’ section and a ‘B’ section, with the top two teams from each group playing in the respective finals.
A Section: Kevin Lynchs A, Lavey, Banagher, Swatragh, Kevin Lynchs B
B Section: Na Magha, Coleraine, Lavey B
In the B section Na Magha defeated Coleraine in the final, whilst in the A section the 2 Kevin Lynchs teams progressed after the group games. With bragging rights to play for, the Kevin Lynch A team won through in a keenly contested match. Hopefully the competition will have helped both Na Magha and Kevin Lynchs with their preparations for the All Ireland Feile beginning on the 6th of July.
The under 16 competition was contested between 7 clubs. The top 2 in each group went into the A semi finals, whilst the bottom teams went into the B section play offs. After the group games the tables ended up as follows:
Section 1: Lavey, Kevin Lynchs, Swatragh, Coleraine
Section 2: Slaughtneil, Na Magha, Banagher
In the A semis Kevin Lynchs defeated Slaughtneil whilst Lavey defeated Na Magha after extra time, to set up a Lavey v Dungiven final. In the B section Banagher defeated Coleraine to set up a final against Swatragh. Both finals were very entertaining games with some good hurling on show. All the players showed great heart and endurance to put on such an entertaining finals at the end of a long evenings hurling. Ultimately Lavey and Banagher won their respective sections. Congratulations to both clubs.
The winning teams of the 7s competition were presented with a set of club Derry jerseys. Well done to all the clubs who took part in the tournaments.
