Antrim Shock Wexford to reach U21 Final
Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling All-Ireland U21 Championship Semi-Final:
Wexford 1-16 Antrim 2-15
Antrim caused a sensation at Semple Stadium, Thurles this afternoon by beating Leinster champions Wexford to become the first side from Ulster to reach the All-Ireland U21 final in the 48-year history of the competition.
Ciaran Clarke and Stephen McAfee, who scored 2-9 between them, were the first half goalscorers for the Saffrons, who led by 2-5 to 0-9 at the break.
Wexford trailed by eight points at one stage in the closing minutes, but they put in a terrific late comeback, and a goal from Conor McDonald set up a grandstand finish.
With three minutes left on the clock, Wexford still had time to rescue a draw, but Jack Guiney’s late free was deflected over the bar and Antrim held on for an against-the-odds win.
The Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling All-Ireland U21 Championship Final between Antrim and Clare will take place on Saturday 14th September. Throw in is 5.00pm at Semple Stadium, Thurles.
