Cúrsa Cuimhneacháin Shéamuis de Faoite 2015 Launched
Martin McAviney, Uactarán Chomhairle Uladh CLG was in Downing on Thursday 14th May to officially launch the Irish language course which is sponsored by the Ulster Council of the GAA. The launch was also attended by members of Coiste Chúrsa Cuimhneacháin Shéamuis de Faoite, members of the Downings GAA club executive, members of the Downing GAA football team who have qualified for the All Ireland finals of Comórtas Peil na Gaeltachta which will take place in Ardara over the June Bank Holiday weekend and Máire de Faoite.
This year’s course will run from Monday 20th July until Friday 24th July. The course which has been renamed after one of its original founders is now known as Cúrsa Cuimhneacháin Shéamuis de Faoite. This year is the 27th consecutive year for this course which is designed to improve the level of Irish for adult members of the GAA. There are three levels ranging from the Bun Rang for beginners to the Meán Rang or Intermediate level for those who have a reasonable degree of Irish and Ard Rang for those who are proficient in Irish and simply want to brush up on their language skills.
Classes are run each day by qualified teachers from 10.30am until 3.30pm and this is followed each day by singing and céilí dancing classes from 3.30pm – 5.00pm. Entertainment which is provided each evening includes A Drama by the local Aisteoirí Mhíobhaigh, A Concert by An Crann Óg, Lectures, Ceilí Mór with the Duntally Ceilí Band and on the final night there is a banquet and music in the Síbín Ceoil in Downings. All classes are free of charge and are open to members of an Chumann Lúthchleas Gaeil.
