Official Opening of Woodlands Playing Fields

GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghaíl and Belfast Lord Mayor, Alderman Brian Kingston cut the ribbon to officially open the refurbished Woodlands Playing Fields, joined by pupils from Bunscoil Phobail Feirste.

Woodlands Playing Fields in west Belfast have underwent a significant refurbishment thanks to a partnership between Belfast City Council and the GAA.

Following an investment of £2.1 million (£450,000 of which was provided by the GAA), the refurbished site now boasts three full size GAA pitches, including a 3G floodlit pitch. All three pitches can be used for other sports such as soccer and rugby. Players can now also benefit from of a state of the art eight room changing pavilion and improved parking facilities.

At the official opening of the playing fields Aogán Ó Fearghaíl, President of the GAA said: ”I am delighted to attend the opening of these excellent new multi sport facilities that will be suitable for both training and playing Gaelic games for years to come. The GAA’s investment in Woodlands is part of our ongoing Belfast Development plan and National Urban Strategy with £1 million committed to improve GAA facilities across the city. I commend Belfast City Council, our officials from Ulster GAA, Antrim GAA and Down GAA for their successful inputs to this great initiative.”

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Brian Kingston commented: “As part of our Investment Programme, we set aside £14.1 million to improve facilities at ten sites across Belfast, as well as a further £1 million from the GAA. I’m delighted to see this facility open today and that GAA, rugby and soccer enthusiasts alike will be able to enjoy it.

“Sporting activity is so beneficial to our physical and mental wellbeing, and creates so many community linkages and friendships – this is an investment which will generate an incredible return for the city for many years to come”.
