Carrick reach Brock decider
Danske Bank Brock Cup semi-final :
Patrician High Carrickmacross 2-12 St Patrick’s Maghera 1-12
This Danske Bank Brock Cup semi-final reached fever pitch in the 54th minute when a long ball into the Carrickmacross area was fielded and despatched to the net by Cathair Higgins. That tied the teams on 1-11 each and set up a thrilling final few minutes.
Patrician had led from early in the contest but, now pulled back to evens, they conjured up an excellent response. Ronan Grimes finished a length of the field move with a point to edge them ahead and, as the game entered added time, they managed another burst out of defence and a long ball from Sean Jones was grabbed by Lee McDonnell who slotted it to the corner of the net.
Maghera could only manage a James McGurk point in reply as time ran out on them.
Early exchanges were evenly contested until a sweeping Patrician move finished with Donnacha Swinburne firing to the net in the 16th minute for a 1-3 to 0-2 lead. Swinburne also contributed three points during that opening half for Carrick to turn over 1-7 to 0-5 ahead at the break.
Once again during the first 20 minutes of the second half, the teams traded scores but Maghera looked to have stepped up a gear just before that Higgins goal. When it came, it put the jets under Patrician and they now go through to a final meeting with St Colman’s Newry who defeated St Patrick’s Academy earlier this week.
