Patrician win the Monaghan MacRory derby

October 25th, 2017

Danske Bank MacRory Cup

Patrician High Carrickmacross 1-15 St Macartan’s Monaghan 2-9

Two goals from Cormac McKenna in the last ten minutes gave this game in Aughnamullan the appearance of being a lot closer than it actually was.

The truth was that Patrician High controlled the play, especially with first half wind assistance when they restricted St Macartan’s to just four points, while they totted up a half-time total of 1-9.

Sean Burns gave a wonderful display of dead-ball kicking particularly during that opening half when distance or angle counted for little.

He was well supported in attack by Andrew Burns who shot two fine points before finding the bottom corner of the net in the 22nd minute.

Although St Macartan’s had the breeze behind them in the second period, Carrick held them at arm’s length throughout and their only concern was the loss of two players to red cards in the final ten minutes, with the straight red for Liam óg Murray ruling him out of the next game.

Murray had been having a good game up until his dismissal but after that St Macartan’s seemed to get the breaks and Cormac McKenna’s two goals closed the gap significantly. But it always looked likely that Patrician would hold out for a first win in the campaign.

Patrician : Andrew Woods 1-2, Sean Burns 0-7, 0-5 frees, Jack McMahon 0-2, Liam óg Murray 0-2, Barry Kearns 0-1, Ciaran McNulty 0-1.

St Macartan’s : Cormac McKenna 2-0, Aaron Mohan 0-4, 0-2 frees, Jack O’Hanlon 0-2, Oisin McKenna 0-1, Ronan King 0-1, Oisin Gleeson 0-1
