Impressive MacRory start from Maghera
Danske Bank MacRory Cup
St Patrick’s Maghera 2-12 St Colman’s Newry 0-13
Two Lorcan McWilliams goals inside the opening 20 minutes helped launch St Patrick’s Maghera’s Danske Bank MacRory Cup campaign with an impressive win in Stewartstown yesterday afternoon.
McWilliams’ first goal derailed St Colman’s who were going well at 0-3 to 0-2 up at that point. Although Cian McConville responded with a point, Maghera hit a second goal in the 17th minute and then went on a scoring spree that delivered six unanswered points before the break.
Anton Tohill and Jude McAtamney had been strong in midfield during that opening half and the McWilliams’ twins caused plenty of problems for the Newry defence.
St Colman’s improved significantly with the wind behind them during the second half and sub Eoghan Byrne shot three points and Thomas Travers weighed in with four more.
However Maghera had established a big interval lead and once Lorcan McWilliams popped over their first score of the second half in the 44th minute, they were back on track and remained comfortably ahead to take their opening points.
