Abbey sets up Newry derby in Brock semi-finals
Danske Bank Brock Cup quarter-final
Abbey CBS Newry 2-7 St Macartan’s Monaghan 1-3
The result from yesterday’s closely-contested Danske Bank Brock Cup quarter-final in Newry means that there will be a derby semi-final next week, possibly in Páirc Esler.
Playing conditions were difficult enough and that more than anything was responsible for the low half-time score of 1-1 to Abbey CBS and 0-3 to St Macartan’s, Rory Kearney with a fortunate enough three-pointer for the Newry school.
In the second half, Abbey added 1-3 without reply during the third quarter with Eoin Loughran finishing a quality goal in the 44th minute.
St Macartan’s then got a life-line with Dylan Doogan-Balentine stroking home a penalty, but Abbey responded with the last three points of the game to set up a semi-final with cross-city rivals St Colman’s who defeated Omagh CBS late last week by 0-10 to 1-6.
Competition favourites St Patrick’s Maghera are also through to the semi-finals; last week they were comfortable winners over St Patrick’s Armagh. Their semi-final opponents will be decided on Tuesday after St Patrick’s Cavan face St Mary’s Magherafelt.
Abbey : Eoin Loughran 1-1 Rory Kearney 1-0, Niall Toner 0-2, Eoin Reel 0-2, Ryan Magill 0-1.
St Macartan’s : Dylan Doogan-Balentine 1-0 pen, Kevin Fitzpatrick 0-2 frees, Tiarnan Kierans 0-1.
