Late points help Dungiven into Nagle final
Danske Bank Nagle Cup semi-final
St Patrick’s Dungiven 2-14 St Joseph’s Coalisland 3-9
LATE points from Caelan Hazlett and Player of the Match Padraig Hasson sealed a memorable victory for St Patrick’s Dungiven in yesterday’s Danske Bank Nagle Cup semi-final in Glen, Maghera.
Dungiven, who needed extra-time to defeat St Killian’s Garron Tower in the quarter final a fortnight ago, found themselves 1-5 to 0-2 down at the end of the first quarter, but burst into life to lead by 1-9 to 1-7 at the end of an excellent opening half.
Ben Clements got St Joseph’s Coalisland off to a great start with a goal in the second minute and they dominated the opening quarter with fine points from five different scorers to establish a good lead.
However a 15th minute point from Barry Harkin kick-started Dungiven and they picked off three more points before Jack McGonigle poached a goal in the 22nd minute to edge them in front and points from Shay Millar and Hasson kept them two clear at the break.
Coalisland came out strongly and Ben Clements claimed his second major with Liam Cushnahan and Michael Robinson tagging on points to swing the game in favour of the Tyrone school.
However a 39th minute goal from Padraig Hasson swung the pendulum in the opposite direction and, despite a goal from Ciaran Corr levelling the argument in the 52nd minute, the Derry boys kept their cool and finished the job with points from Hazlett and Hasson.
The second semi-final between St Benedict’s Randalstown and De La Salle Downpatrick takes place tomorrow (THURSDAY).
