ANOTHER Danske Bank MacRory Cup tie that was won during the third quarter!
LAST year’s beaten semi-finalists St Patrick’s Armagh looked in danger at the break in Garvaghey yesterday evening when they held just a two points’ lead, but they hit the first four points of the second half and that was enough to see them over the line to top Group D.
By the time Shane O’Donnell eventually got St Eunan’s going in the 43rd minute with a fine point, the gap was too wide to close and Armagh closed ranks with defenders Oscar McKeagney, Oliver Guy and Conor Toner stepping up to the mark. Earlier Oisin Hughes and Micheal McGleenan had caught the eye with Justin Kieran the key man in front of goal.
While Dylan Dougan opened St Eunan’s account in the first minute, Eglish’s Dyllon Horsfield replied before Kieran floated over the first of his three first half points that put his side into a narrow interval lead of 0-5 to 0-3.
Kieran, Oisin Hughes, Michael Conroy from a free and Ruairí McDonnell stretched that to 0-9 to 0-3 before Letterkenny found the range again and despite a strong effort from Anthony Gallagher in defence, Pauric McGettigan at midfield and Shane O’Donnell up front the Donegal boys came up just short on the night.
In the final round of games, St Eunan’s face St Paul’s Bessbrook and Armagh will be taking on Carrickmacross.

LIAM óg Murray’s excellent goal right at the start of the second half was probably the key score in this well-contested Danske Bank MacRory Cup game in Inniskeen yesterday. It stretched an interval advantage of four points to seven, but more importantly stalled St Paul’s wind-fuelled comeback for at least another ten minutes.
Ryan Farrelly had given Patrician High a great start to the game with an early goal but they were knocked back right on half-time when Eoghan Woods fired to their net to turn the teams over at 1-5 to 1-1.
Given the strength of the breeze, St Paul’s looked well enough placed to take their first points of the campaign, but after Murray’s strike they struggled to get on the score-board and, then when they did start to make headway, Farrelly fired in an excellent third goal for the Carrickmacross side who were then able to close ranks and frustrate a Bessbrook side for whom Sean McVerry, Jack Cunningham and Luke Mallon tried hard.
Ryan Hughes scored both second half goals for St Paul’s, one from the penalty spot, and Carrick did well to hold on at the end although Murray and Farrelly were always a threat on the break and Shea Magill needed to be at his best to prevent further goals.
