McGovern goals take Abbey through in Extra Time
Danske Bank Rannafast Cup quarter-final
Abbey CBS 2-7 St Patrick’s Maghera 0-9 (AET)
MIDWAY through the second half of this tough uncompromising struggle at the Dub yesterday Maghera seemed to have broken Abbey’s resistance when they opened up a 0-6 to 0-2 lead, after being a point ahead at the break.
However with a length of the field move, Abbey opened Maghera’s defence and Player of the Match Eoin Loughran placed Odhrán Murdock for a goal.
Loughran and Matthew Downey traded points before Loughran added two further points to put Abbey a point ahead with injury-time beckoning. Maghera however earned a very late free that Downey converted to tie the game at 1-5 to 0-8 and force extra time.
There was a point each from frees for Loughran and Downey during the first period of added time when Maghera had the aid of the breeze.
In the second period the wind was used to pump a long ball into John McGovern who was isolated one on one in front of goal. The Burren forward took the defender on and slammed the ball to the net.
And Niall Toner landed a very late free to secure a semi-final with St Patrick’s Cavan while the other Newry school, St Colman’s will face St Patrick’s Armagh.
