St Colman’s into Rannafast decider
Danske Bank Rannafast Cup semi-final
St Colman’s Newry 7-12 St Patrick’s Armagh 2-8
EARLIER in the week Abbey CBS Newry eliminated a fancied St Patrick’s Maghera in an extra-time Danske Bank Rannafast Cup quarter-final and yesterday the other Newry seat of learning, St Colman’s College, produced some brilliant attacking football in Mayobridge to reach the final of the same competition.
Ronan Fitzpatrick, Padraig Clancy, Jack Howlett and Aaron Sheehan all hit the net in the opening half and St Colman’s led by 4-4 to 0-4 at the break against a St Patrick’s Armagh side that found it difficult to break down a defensive unit built around Aaron Norris, Ronan Campbell and Macdarragh Hynes.
Ironically for the team from the Cathedral City, it was the St Colman’s Clann Éireann attacking quartet of Dan McCarthy, Oran McCafferty, Redmond French and Aaron Sheehan that did the most damage ably assisted by Adam Crimmins and the ball-winning ability of Carrickcruppen’s Oisin O’Hare.
Crimmins hit the net twice during the second half and Padraig Clancy doubled his first half tally but there were some passages of great play from St patrick’s as well, both goals coming from good play by midfielder James Walsh and Brian Brady.
But it is St Colman’s who have reached the final where they will face the winners from Wednesday’s second semi-final between St Patrick’s Cavan and Abbey CBS.
St Colman’s : Adam Crimmins (2-2), Padraig Clancy (2-0), Ronan Fitzpatrick (1-2), Aaron Sheehan (1-1), Jack Howlett (1-0), Dan McCarthy (0-4), Oran McCafferty (0-3)
St Patrick’s : James Walsh 1-3, Brian Brady 1-1, Sean Quigley 0-2, Mark McKeever 0-1, Oisin Conaty 0-1
