St Ronan’s power home during 2nd half
Danske Bank Corn Loch an Iúir semi-final
St Ronan’s Lurgan 6-11 St Malachy’s Castlewellan 3-6
IT WILL be a Lurgan v Letterkenny final in the Danske Bank Corn Loch an Iúir competition after St Ronan’s pulled away convincingly during the second half of this semi-final with St Malachy’s Castlewellan in Newry yesterday.
The game was well-fought during the first half, but when James Savage had to leave the action with an injury just before the break, St Malachy’s chances of pulling off a win disappeared.
Savage was proving a handful for the Lurgan defence. He had already scored 2-1 and set up a third goal for Adam Walsh. Indeed he picked up the injury when it looked as if he might finish once more to the net.
Castlewellan struggled for scores in his absence despite the efforts of Gerard Cunningham and Shay Stratton in defence, Christopher Kelly-McEvoy in midfield and Ryan Magorrian and Ronan McCrickard up front.
However St Ronan’s had strong players in Callum Wilson, Rogan McVeigh, Eoin Lennon, Aidan Cassidy, Shea Lavery and captain Ethan McKenna and were able to control the second half to reach the final.
First half goals from Wilson (2), Lavery and McVeigh took them in at the break with a 4-7 to 3-4 lead. Ethan McKenna and JP McAlinden scored their two goals during the second half and they look like a team that will be difficult to beat in the final.
St Ronan’s : Callum Wilson 2-3, Rogan McVeigh 1-3, Ethan McKenna 1-2, Shea Lavery 1-0, JP McAlinden 1-0, Patrick O’Hare 0-2, Padraig Gowdy 0-1
St Malachy’s : James Savage 2-1, Adam Walsh 1-0, Ryan Magorrian 0-2, Christopher Kelly-McEvoy 0-2, Eoin Devlin 0-1.
