Academy eliminates St Mary’s from MacRory
Danske Bank MacRory Cup Eliminator
St Patrick’s Academy Dungannon 7-20 St Mary’s CBGS Belfast 0-7
ST MARY’S Belfast looked out of their depth in the group stages of the Danske Bank MacRory Cup and that had left them low on morale coming into this eliminator in Maghery and despite the best efforts of Eoghan McMenamin, Cormac McGettigan, Conor Morris and Eoin Matassa, they suffered another heavy defeat with St Patrick’s Academy comfortably qualifying for a quarter-final play-off against St Eunan’s Letterkenny.
Mícheál O’Neill’s goal in the seventh minute gave the Academy a 1-3 to 0-1 lead and by the end of the first quarter the city side was competing for pride as Neil Kilpatrick, Lorcan Kilpatrick and Luke Donnelly all had found the net, Lorcan’s goal a cracker that thundered to the top corner of the St Mary’s net from 25m out in the 11th minute.
Things didn’t get any better for St Mary’s with further goals from Oisin McGee and Ryan McCabe making it 6-6 to 0-6 at the break. McMenamin shot five of the six scores for St Mary’s.
St Mary’s could well have pulled a goal back right at the start of the second half, but the effort was saved and the Academy continued their domination of the game, scoring some fine points from Luke Donnelly, Ryan McCabe and substitutes Scott McCann and Paddy Keogh, with Ronan McHugh getting their only goal of the second period.
