Knock fall to Cathair Dhoire in MacLarnon
Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup quarter-final
Cathair Dhoire 3-11 Our Lady’s and St Patrick’s Knock 0-6
CATHAIR Dhoire were generally in charge of last night’s Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup quarter-final played in cold and frosty Slaughtneil. But a goal and seven points during the last 12 minutes of play put a certain gloss on the score-line.
Our Lady’s and St Patrick’s Knock struggled to get the ball beyond their half-forward line in the opening half and could only record a single point from a Niall Grimley free in the 22nd minute.
At the other end of the pitch James Lynch buried a goal in the seventh minute, but Cathair Dhoire didn’t really put clear space between them and their opponents until Jude óg Moore blasted home a second goal in the 20th minute as the Foyle-siders built up an interval lead of 2-3 to 0-1.
The game changed dramatically during the third quarter with Knock hitting five points; two each from Grimley and Caolan Cunningham with a Joseph Tunney white flag in the middle of the sandwich and the game was briefly back in the melting pot at 2-4 to 0-6 after 47 minute.
Then Ben McCarron got the Derry side going again with a fine point, followed by a second goal from James Lynch in the 49th minute and the game was out of Knock’s reach.
Cathair Dhoire eased themselves into the last four with a flurry of points near the end, including three more for Ben McCarron and one for sub Eoghan Cassidy with his first possession.
The next MacLarnon action is on Friday evening in Lurgan when St Louis Ballymena are in action against Our Lady’s Castleblayney
