St Mary’s emphatic winners of Brock Shield
Danske Bank Brick Shield final
St Mary’s Magherafelt 6-10 St Macartan’s Monaghan 1-7
ALTHOUGH both the half time and full time scorelines do not look good for St Macartan’s Monaghan, this Danske Bank Brock Shield final was very competitive throughout and St Mary’s Magherafelt’s goalie Tiarnan MacOscar brought off two brilliant saves, one in each half, to deny goals that would have made the game a lot closer.
Despite the result, Sem players such as goalscorer Dara McKenna, Dylan O’Reilly and exciting corner back Bobby Walker worked tirelessly throughout and didn’t deserve to be as far in arrears as 4-9 to 0-3 at the break.
Half back Ronan Walls made the difference with two goals either side of a Conor Johnson strike, while MacOscar brought off an outstanding save in the 21st minute to deny Dara McKenna.
However Eoin McEvoy’s goal in the 26th minute secured the win for St Mary’s although they still had to face the breeze for the final half hour.
McKenna got a goal for St Macartan’s early in the second half, but that was cancelled by Terry Devlin at the other end and, with MacOscar again performing heroics, the south Derry side remained in control, Player of the Match Ronan Walls completing his hat-trick a few minutes from time, yet again set up by a clever reverse pass from Devlin.
