Stalemate as Armagh and Cavan draw in St Tiernach’s Park
After 90 minutes football there was nothing to choose between Armagh and Cavan as they fought out a draw in St Tiernach’s Park, Clones.
A goal from Jarlath Óg Burns midway through the second half looked to have given Armagh the upperhand in the contest but a Cian Mackey inspired Cavan salvaged a draw in normal time.
A point in extra-time from Stefan Campbell looked to have given Armagh the advantage but Mackey struck again, for his third point after being introduced off the bench to ensure another day out.
There was nothing to choose between the teams throughout the contest with Niall Murray and Rian O’Neill leading the lines for their respective sides.
Jarlath Óg Burn added two from play, while Gearoid McKiernan added two for Cavan, as the sides were level 0-7 to 0-7 at the break.
Aidan Forker, Aidan Nugent and Jemar Hall were all on target for Armagh in the second half, while the Murray brothers, Stephen and Niall were excellent for Cavan. After Burns struck for goal for Armagh and Ciaran Brady saw red for Cavan, the game looked up for the Breffni County.
However late scores from Dara McVeety and then Mackey forced the game to extra-time.
The replay will take place next Sunday morning.
