Abbey reach Loch an Iúir final
Danske Bank Corn Loch an Iúir semi final:
Abbey Vocational Donegal 5-7 St Mary’s CBGS Belfast 0-5
PERHAPS if St Mary’s CBGS had first use of the strong breeze yesterday they might well have been a lot closer than the final score-line from this Danske Bank Corn Loch an Iúir semi-final indicates.
As it was, the Donegal town side had it and they put themselves in charge of the tie at the break, leading by 2-6 to two points scored by Cormac Austin.
Ruairí McLoughlin’s early goal was important, but Kevin Muldoon’s right on the half-time whistle probably killed off the Belfast side’s hopes.
St Mary’s had chances in the second half, two shots coming off the cross-bar, and they opened well with points from Austin and Dara Cunningham but the comeback was short-lived with Senan Carr shooting a third Abbey goal on the break.
The Donegal boys added two late goals, a second from Ruairí McLoughlin and then one from Oisin Mogan, and they eased into next week’s decider with good performances from Donal Gallagher and John Bell in defence and McLoughlin and Kevin Muldoon up front while Shea O’Connor, Calum Lappin and Liam Lynn worked hard for St Mary’s.
The second semi-final also features a Donegal school, St Columba’s Stranorlar reaching this stage for the first time, but possibly under dogs against Patrician High Carrickmacross.
