First half goals Enough for St Colman’s
Danske Bank MacRory Cup
St Colman’s Newry 3-13 Patrician High 0-13
A GOAL right from the throw-in, another after five minutes and a third seven minutes before the break made certain that St Colman’s Newry would come away from Cloughan with a comfortable victory over Patrician Carrickmacross in yesterday evening’s Danske Bank MacRory Cup tie.
It was Pádraig Clancy that broke down the wing from the throw-in and he picked out Adam Crimmins with a neat pass for that early goal.
Then, before Patrician settled, Crimmins made and executed a second goal to put St Colman’s 2-1 to no score ahead. Indeed Carrick ‘keeper Joe Kirk played well to prevent the Newry side going on the rampage although he could do little to prevent their third goal with Clancy running from deep to take a pass and bury the ball in the net.
St Colman’s led by 3-6 to 0-5 at the break and the result was already in the bag. In fairness to Patrician they rallied around Shane Hanratty’s heroic work in defence and Sean Jones and Liam McDonald (from frees) kept them in touch during the second half.
The Newry team however was never under pressure and both Jack Murtagh (2) and Oran Wilson came off the bench to shoot points in the last quarter.
But the message coming out of both St Colman’s games to date is that they are a real force going forward with Abbey CBS their next test in the Newry derby on Saturday (11am) in Páirc Esler.
