Cavan finish MacRory group with a win
Danske Bank MacRory
St Patrick’s Cavan 1-13 Holy Trinity Cookstown 2-6
From Kevin Kelly in Clones
St Patrick’s Cavan ensured a 3rd place finish in their group thanks to this deserved Danske Bank MacRory Cup win over Holy Trinity Cookstown in the Peace Park in Clones yesterday evening.
The Cavan lads led 0-8 to 0-2 at the break and while Cookstown closed that gap to four during the second half, a missed penalty from the Tyrone lads proved to be a key moment in the game.
Full forward Daryl McGurren was in fine form for the winners hitting a number of first half points with Fionntain O’Reilly also on target. Shea Lawn and Blaine Ryan were the Holy Trinity marksmen.
A Jack Mooney goal in the third quarter increased Cavan’s advantage but Cookstown hit back with a major of their own from Shea Quinn.
Holy Trinity were then awarded a penalty but Callan Devlin’s effort went the wrong side of the post. Paul Connolly and Lawn helped close the gap to four but that was as good as it got for Cookstown
McGurren took his personal haul to 0-9 and while Cookstown got a late goal through Pauric Lynch it came too late in the day to save them. Cavan now face St Mary’s Magherafelt in the play-offs after Christmas while Cookstown take on St Ronan’s Lurgan.
St Patrick’s: D McGurren 0-9 (6F), J Mooney 1-0, F O Reilly 0-3, O Brady 0-1
Holy Trinity : S Quinn 1-1 (1F), P Lynch 1-0, S Lawn 0-2 (2F), P Connolly 0-2 (2F), B Lynch 0-1
