Lord Mayor visits Fresh Start Through Sport session

Belfast City Council Lord Mayor, Kate Nicholl attended the latest session of the ‘Fresh Start Through Sport’ programme in Queens University Physical Education Centre to see at first hand a group of young people from North Belfast taking part in the Department for Communities-led initiative.

This diversionary programme utilises sport to bring young people from different communities together and is delivered by Ulster GAA, The Irish FA, Ulster Rugby and The Belfast Giants.

Over a 16-week period the participants have the opportunity to try out each of the different sports, learn about sports volunteering, nutrition, mental health and first aid, as well as attending a major game organised by each of the four sports organisations.

The session focused on disability sports with Ulster GAA coaches delivering a practical lesson on Wheelchair Hurling and Wheelchair Gaelic Football, which allowed the young people to experience some of the opportunities available in wheelchair sports and what the games are like for a wheelchair user.
