Abbey see off Armagh challenge to make it through
Abbey CBS are through to the Danske Bank MacRory Cup Quarter Finals after they held on against St Patrick’s Grammar School Armagh in Burren GAA on Thursday evening.
Abbey were probably the better side with Aodhán O’Callaghan, Finn Murdock and David Ruddy always prominent but they didn’t put their imprint on the score-board until the third quarter when points from Eoin Loughran, Liam O’Connor (2) and Zach Murdock gave them a 0-8 to 1-1 lead after the teams finished the first half level.
Murdock added a ninth Abbey point on the re-start and although Armagh closed the gap twice to three points, Abbey held out.
The early Armagh goal came from Ryan McAlarey and it rallied the team with Tadgh Grimley, Jake Toal, Rhys Stephens and Mark McKenna making life difficult for the Abbey who managed to pull themselves level at 0-4 to 1-1 by the interval.
However the scores conceded in the third quarter effectively ended Armagh’s run in the MacRory this year with Abbey qualifying with St Mary’s Magherafelt from Section A.
