Monaghan v Down – Three Previous Meetings
24ú Meitheamh 2017
Ulster SFC Semi Final
An Dún 1-14 Muineachán 0-15 at Athletic Grounds
Darragh O’Hanlon’s second half penalty was the vital score, as Down overturned a 19 point deficit from 12 months ago, and secured a place in the Ulster Final against Tyrone. O’Hanlon’s penalty opened up a seven point lead for the Mournemen, and while Monaghan came roaring back in the closing stages, they had left themselves too much work to do. In front of a bumper crowd of 13, 396 at the Athletic Grounds, Connaire Harrison and Kevin McKernan landed spectacular first half scores to put Down two ahead at the break. After the penalty, Conor McManus, Darren Hughes and Jack McCarron all raised white flags, but Down hung on for an impressive victory.

Ulster SFC Quarter Final
Muineachán 2-22 An Dún 0-09 at Clones
Monaghan opened the defence of their Ulster title in stunning fashion at Clones, where they dismantled a meagre Down challenge. Down had actually started the brighter of the two sides, with a couple of Darragh O’Hanlon frees early on seeing them lead after the first quarter. But from there on in, everything went the way of the Farney. Conor McManus converted five frees to see Monaghan ahead 0-9 to 0-6 at the break. That gap was further increased on the restart with point from Ryan McAnespie and Conor McCarthy, before Kieran Hughes blasted home a goal. By that stage the result was beyond doubt, as Monaghan outscored Down 2-13 to 0-3 in the second half.

Ulster SFC Semi Final
An Dún 1-14 Muineachán 1-13 at Athletic Grounds
Down chased down a nine-point deficit to seal a remarkable comeback and book their place in the Ulster Final for the first time in nine years. Benny Coulter and Liam Doyle made telling contributions for the Mournemen, who had trailed 0-11 to 0-2 just before the half-time break. But their lifeline came in the form of a penalty just before the whistle, which Aidan Carr expertly converted to kickstart their revival. But they were dealt another blow with under 15 minutes remaining when Tommy Freeman found the net to open a five point gap. But Down regrouped and stormed for home with Ambrose Rogers and Kalum King dominant at midfield. Monaghan had a late chance to salvage a draw, but Dick Clerkin couldn’t convert.
