Cahir McMonagle and Shane McGuigan rifled over late scores as Mickey Harte’s first match in charge of Derry culminated in victory.

Gerard Smith scored a 42nd minute goal to guide Cavan 1-6 to 0-8 in front, but Derry, with Paul Cassidy influential, recovered to eke out a win.

In Ballybofey Donegal proved far too strong for an youthful Armagh selection.

Michael Langan and Kevin McGettigan scored opening period goals for Jim McGuinness’ team, who departed 2-6 to 1-3 ahead at the break.

Immediately after the restart Oisín Gallen added a third major for Donegal, who cruised to an emphatic triumph.

David Garland’s 55th minute goal was the decisive score as Monaghan defeated Antrim in Castleblayney.

The visitors’ led 0-10 to 0-9 before Garland’s intervention for Monaghan, who finished powerfully.

Antrim were spirited until the end, but Garland landed an insurance point in the closing stages for Monaghan.
