10 gCeist faoin Scéim ‘Gaeilge sa Chlub’ – 10 Questions about Gaeilge sa Chlub

March 10th, 2024

  1. Cad é atá i gceist le Gaeilge sa Chlub? What is Gaeilge sa Chlub?

Is scéim scoláireachta í seo do bhaill CLG in Uladh le tabhairt faoin dioplóma sa Ghaeilge in Ollscoil Uladh. Tá ar na baill seo an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn sa chlub i ndiaidh dóibh bliain den chúrsa a dhéanamh (agus sa todhchaí, le cuidiú Dé!)

This is a scholarship scheme for GAA members in Ulster to study the Diploma in Irish in Ulster University. These members must then promote Gaeilge within their clubs through the club project after one year of study (and into the future, hopefully!)

  1. Cén uair ar cuireadh tús léi? When did the scheme begin?

Cuireadh an scéim seo ar bun in 2013 ar mhaithe leis an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn i gclubanna CLG an chúige. Léigh tuilleadh anseo: https://shorturl.at/rtwIO

The scheme was founded in 2013 with the aim to improve the promotion of Gaeilge within GAA clubs in Ulster.

  1. Cá háit ar féidir liom tabhairt faoin dioplóma? Where can I study for the diploma?

Is féidir leis an fhoghlaimeoir an cúrsa seo a dhéanamh ar cheithre champas: Ollscoil Uladh, Béal Feirste, Ar An Chorr Chríochach, Campas Mhig Aoidh i nDoire agus An Chultúrlann in Ard Mhacha.

Students can undertake their studies in one of four centres of learning: UU Belfast on York Street, Cookstown, UU Magee in Derry, and An Chultúrlann in Armagh.

  1. Cé mhéad airgead atá i gceist? How much money is involved?

Éiríonn le fiche gach bliain, ar meán, agus roinntear pota airgid eatarthu. Ní chlúdaíonn an scoláireacht iomlán na dtáillí.

Ulster GAA provides funding each year for student scholarships. This is divided between successful applicants. On average, between £450-500 is awarded to successful applicants. These studentships do not cover the full cost of the tuition.

Students should note you can only avail of Gaeilge sa Chlub for one year of the diploma course.

  1. Cé atá in ann iarratas a chur isteach? Who can apply for the scheme?

Is féidir le duine ar bith ón CLG in Uladh iarratas a chur isteach. Tá ar an iarratasóir uimhir ballraíochtaí an CLG a thabhairt dúinn, agus cuirtear scéala chuig rúnaí an chlub le rá go bhfuil duine ón chlub i ndiaidh deontas a fháil. Cuireann seo in iúl don chlub agus don chumann go bhfuil duine ag foghlaim na teanga ar mhaithe leis an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn sa phobal.

Any GAA member in Ulster can apply for the studentship. The applicant must provide their membership number, and their GAA club secretary will be contacted to inform them that a member is in receipt of a scholarship from Ulster GAA as part of the process of promoting Gaeilge within the community, and the GAA club.

  1. Cad é atá le scríobh ar an fhoirm iarratais? What to write on the application form?

Caithfear cúis na foghlama a chur ar ár súile dúinn, agus ní mór don iarratasóir na smaointe atá acu maidir le forbairt agus fás na teanga sa chlub CLG a lua chomh maith.

Applicants will describe their reasons for undertaking the diplóma, with emphasis on their plans and ideas for developing and promoting Gaeilge within their club.

  1. Cad é atá le déanamh ag mic léinn na scéime? What do recipients have to do?

Caithfidh na mic léinn tionscadal a reáchtáil sa chlub a chuireann an Ghaeilge chun cinn nó a ardaíonn próifíl na teanga. Caithfear seo a dhéanamh fá dheireadh mhí Iúil.

Students in receipt of a studentship from the Gaeilge sa Chlub scheme must organise a project in their club that promotes Irish and increases the profile of the language within the club community. The deadline for this project is the end of July following the year of study for which they received the grant.

  1. Cad é atá déanta ag clubanna go dtí seo? What type of projects have recipients carried out in their clubs thus far?

Is iomaí rud atá déanta ag clubanna ó bhí 2013 ann agus is iontach an rud é an nuálaíocht agus an éagsúlacht a fheicimid gach bliain: ranganna Gaeilge, dianchúrsaí, ciorcal comhrá, traenáil trí Ghaeilge, lá teaghlaigh, oíche eolais ar logainmneacha nó ar bhailte fearainn an cheantair, ranganna trí Ghaeilge: cócaireacht  nó ióga, seisiún nirt agus aclaithe, deiseanna foghlama do chóitseálaithe an chlub agus go leor eile nach iad.

This scheme has produced a variety of projects showcasing innovation and creativity when it comes to integrating Gaeilge into the fabric of club life. Some of these projects include Irish classes and day courses, conversation circles, training sessions through Irish, family days, information events on place names and local townlands, classes through Irish unrelated to the language itself such as cooking, yoga and strength and conditioning, as well as opportunities for coaches to learn basic Gaeilge to include in training.

  1. Ar chóir go mbeadh an mac léinn ar choiste an chlub chun scoláireacht a fháil ar son an chlub? Does the student have to be on the club committee to receive a scholarship on behalf of the GAA club?

Níor chóir. Is é an rud is tábhachtaí ná go gcuirtear an Ghaeilge chun cinn sa chlubtheach mar gheall ar an chúrsa dioplóma, agus mar thoradh ar a bhfuil foghlamtha ag an mhac léinn.

No. The most important aspect of this is the promotion of Gaeilge within the clubhouse as a result of what the student has learned on the diploma.

  1. An bhfuil tacaíocht ar fáil maidir leis an tionscadal a reáchtáil? Is any support available with the project?

Tá! Eagraítear ceardlann amháin roimh dheireadh na bliana agus ceann eile san Earrach le tacú leis na mic léinn na tionscadail a reáchtáil. Taobh amuigh de na ceardlanna seo, tá Oifigeach Gaeilge CLG Uladh ar fáil le tacú le duine ar bith ar an scéim.

Yes. Two workshops are organised (online) for recipients. One in the winter and another in the spring (during the academic year, e.g. November 2023, and April 2024) to assist students with planning their projects. Outside of these workshops, Ulster GAA’s Irish Language Officer is available to provide further guidance and support if required.
