Ulster GAA raising awareness about the dangers of ‘One Punch’

September 2nd, 2024

During the summer months, Ulster GAA has been showcasing the new ‘One Punch Can Kill’ video, part of an initiative that aims to raise awareness of the serious, and potentially life-threatening, consequences of ‘one punch’.

The campaign has been available through Ulster GAA for several years, initially focusing on scenarios arising primarily during nights out socialising.

However, as concerns about the growing frequency and severity of injuries resulting from ‘One Punch’ situations and off-the-ball incidents in our games has increased, the focus has now shifted to behaviour on the field of play.

Worryingly, trends are showing that injuries sustained on the field of play are increasing in severity and complexity, sometimes leaving victims with lifelong injuries. As an increasing number of these off-the-ball and One Punch incidents are caught on camera, there is also a growing trend that these assaults are pursued through the courts.

The aim of the campaign is to highlight the very serious potential consequences of One Punch and off-the-ball incidents for both the victim and perpetrator; and to remind everyone connected with the GAA, that they have a role to play in preventing violent behaviour at our games.

Tyrone GAA and Fermanagh GAA showcased the One Punch Can Kill video to young players in their juvenile and Academy Camps over the summer months. While it is important that young players participate in the programme, it is crucial that adult teams and people who hold leadership roles in clubs also participate and drive the message by being good role models.

Ulster GAA plan to roll-out the programme over the autumn and winter, and will be making contact with clubs in the coming weeks to schedule delivery. The onus is on all clubs, and individuals to take heed of the campaign message, and to reflect on our own behaviour and values when attending our games.
