Sports Volunteering to Boost Employability Prospects for Enniskillen Students
Three schools in Ennikillen – Mount Lourdes, Enniskillen Royal Grammar School and Devenish College – recently participated in a Multi-Sports Schools Roadshow, focusing on the value and importance of volunteering for employability.
The event was delivered jointly by Ulster GAA, Ulster Rugby and the Irish FA and was hosted at Devenish College in Enniskillen through the DfC-funded ‘Sport a Home for Lifelong Learning’ Project.
Young people aged 17 and 18 were given the opportunity to participate in a Game of Three Halves, consisting of Gaelic football, rugby and soccer.
The group also heard from guest speaker, Ulster Womens rugby player Lucy Thompson, who gave an overview of her career to date, highlighting how her volunteering experience benefited her in furthering a career in sport. Lucy highlighted how volunteering in sport can help individuals develop knowledge and transferable skills, which ultimately can help them in their future careers.
The young people then experienced a practice job interview, exploring how they could use volunteering experience to help answer questions and demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understanding as they transition into further education or the world of work.
The ‘Sport a Home for Lifelong Learning’ programme delivers three schools roadshows per year, with students from nine schools across Ulster benefitting from this experience as they look to pursue a future career in the sporting world.
All participants are encouraged to sign up to the ‘Sports Inspire Awards’, a programme which recognises and rewards their volunteering contribution to sport within their club or schools.
