Big Attendances at Ulster Championships

June 1st, 2012

The throw-in of the 2012 Ulster Senior Football Championship took place on Sunday 20th May in a sun-kissed Breffni Park in Cavan and supporters are out in big numbers to cheer on their teams!

A record attendance of 12,847 attended the Preliminary round match between 2011 Ulster Champs Donegal and Cavan.  Ulster GAA is delighted that overall attendance is up 70% from this time last year and is urging patrons for upcoming games to arrive early.

Nothing beats being there!

Ulster GAA Senior Football Championship Preliminary Round:
Cavan 1-10 Donegal 1-16

A confident performance from Donegal saw them record a comfortable six-point victory over Cavan in the Ulster GAA Football Championship preliminary round on Sunday at Kingspan Breffni Park.

Colm McFadden top-scored with 1-6 for Donegal, and his penalty at the end of the first half effectively killed the game off as Cavan never looked like being able to claw back the six-point deficit that score established.

Although Cavan kept fighting, with full-forward Eugene Keating hitting 0-5 from play and Niall McDermott hitting a second-half penalty, Donegal were always in control and fully deserved their win.

Ulster GAA Football Championship Quarter-Final:
Monaghan 1-12 Antrim 1-9

Monaghan produced a strong finish in Clones, hitting seven of the last eight points to record a three-point win over Antrim in their Ulster GAA Football Championship quarter-final on Sunday.

The Farney men led 1-4 to 0-5 at half-time, with Karl O’Connell’s early goal helping them take control. However, Antrim came back strongly early on in the second half and scored a goal of their own through James Loughrey to turn things around.

The win looked like it would be Antrim’s when they went 1-8 to 1-5 ahead midway through the second half, but Monaghan responded well, and inspired by a brace of fine points from substitute Tommy Freeman, they moved in front.

Their greater experience told in the final few minutes as their big names steered them clear, and into a semi-final clash with either Down or Fermanagh.
