1916, 1956 & 1991 Ulster Final Winners Commemorated at Clones
Patrons at the 2016 Ulster Final got the opportunity to pay tribute to Ulster Final Champions from yesteryear at a sun-soaked St Tiernach’s Park on Sunday 17 July.
Descendants from the Monaghan and Antrim teams who played in the Ulster Senior Football Senior Football Championship Final of 1916 in Clones were presented with special commemorative medals to mark the 1916 centenary.
1956 was a memorable year in the history of the GAA in Tyrone as the county won it’s very first Ulster Senior Football title when they defeated Cavan by 3-05 to 0-04. The successful team of ’56 once again took centre-stage at Clones to commemorate the 60th anniversary of their momentous win.
The winning Down team of 1991 were also honoured at the 2016 Ulster Final in recognition of their outstanding victory over the ’91 favourites and defending Ulster Champions Donegal with a full-time result of 1-15 to 0-10.
