Coláiste Ailigh win Donegal O’Doherty derby
Danske Bank O’Doherty Cup semi-final
Coláiste Ailigh, Letterkenny 1-14 St Catherine’s Killygbegs 0-11
Last night’s all-Donegal Danske Bank O’Doherty Cup semi-final came down to a tale of two penalties.
St Catherine’s earned their penalty in the fifth minute but Odhran McGuinness’ spot kick was brilliantly saved by Josh Pond and that gave Coláiste Ailigh the platform to go on and build a 0-7 to 0-4 interval lead with fine scores from the Mac Gaoithin brothers, Rónán and Eoghan, and Micheál Mac Suibhne.
Jack McSharry and Karl Gallagher had replied for Killybegs with a brace each during the second quarter and Odhrán McGuinness narrowed the gap on the re-start with a point.
However the Letterkenny Gaeilgeoirí won a penalty soon after and Micheál Mac Suibhne coolly slotted it home to widen the gap between the teams.
Although points from Gallagher and McSharry reduced the margin to three points at one stage, Coláiste Ailigh finished strongly with points from Iarlaith Mac Fhionnghaile, Diarmuid Ó Cathail and Dónal Ó Uiginn to set up a final on Tuesday in Bawnacre with Ballybay CC.
Coláiste Ailigh : Micheál Mac Suibhne 1-1, Eoin Mac Gaoithin 0-4, 0-3 frees, Rónán Mac Gaoithin 0-2, Iarlaith Mac Fhionnghaile 0-2, Diarmuid Ó Cathail 0-2, Seán Ó Riain 0-1, Dónal Ó Uiginn 0-1, Seán Mac An Ultaigh 0-1.
St Catherine’s : Jack McSharry 0-5, 0-3 frees, Karl Gallagher 0-4, Odhran McGuinness 0-2.
