Today, on World Mental Health Day 2026, Ulster GAA stands alongside our 2026 charity partner ALPS (All Lives Are Precious), local community mental health groups and grass-roots support networks to support individuals and families across the province.

The global theme for World Mental Health Day 2026 is: “Lived Experiences Heard- Real Voices – Real Change.”

True strength in our GAA community goes far beyond performance on the pitch. It lives in the bravery of those who speak openly about their struggles and create a space where no one feels unheard.

While awareness campaigns have started the conversation, the 2026 theme calls for something deeper and more authentic. It urges us to move past superficial talk and centre the real, everyday experiences of our members, from players and coaches to volunteers and supporters, so we can drive meaningful lasting change together.

Lived experience brings an irreplaceable form of expertise held by the player managing anxiety before stepping onto the pitch, the coach balancing personal grief with community leadership, the family member supporting a loved one through crisis, and the volunteer who knows first-hand what it feels like to seek help when overwhelmed.

When these real voices are given space to speak without judgement or stigma, personal hardship turns into a catalyst for collective healing and community transformation.

Hearing lived experiences allows us to understand what true support looks like in our changing rooms, clubhouses, and sidelines, directly shaping how Ulster GAA, ALPS, and local community groups design training programmes, equip Healthy Club Officers, and deliver accessible, community-rooted mental health resources.

By creating safe, inclusive spaces where every individual feels safe to speak-up we can ensure that no one within our GAA family must carry their burdens alone. Listening creates empathy, empathy breaks down stigma, and together, real voices lead to real, life-saving change.

If you are going through a difficult time, reach out to ALPS or one of the many community organisations and supports working across our towns and villages:

  • ALPS (All Lives Are Precious): +44 28 4489 8216
  • Lifeline (24/7 Northern Ireland Crisis Line): 0808 808 8000
  • Samaritans (24/7 Freephone UK & Ireland): 116 123
  • Pieta (24/7 Republic of Ireland Crisis Line): 1800 247 247 (or text ‘HELP’ to 51444)
  • Text About It (24/7 Republic of Ireland Text Support): Text ‘HELLO’ to 50808
  • HSE Mental Health Information Line (Republic of Ireland): 1800 111 888

On a day like today, take a moment to check in on a teammate, coach or neighbour. Listen without judgment, give them a safe space to share their lived experience and seek support together if they need it because real voices drive real change.
