‘Live to Play’ Road Safety Seminar

May 5th, 2010

The latest in a series of events aimed at highlighting the need for Road Safety will be hosted by the Beragh Red Knights club in conjunction with Eskra Emmetts.

The ‘Live to Play’ Road Safety seminar will take place on next Saturday afternoon, May 8th, in Beragh GAA Sports Pavilion at 1.30pm. Representatives from the Fire and Rescue Service along with staff from the PSNI and the Garda will be among those present.

Fiona McGirr, whose brother Mark was a playing member with the Beragh club, died in a car accident last summer. Fiona will speak to those present and provide an insight on the impact the loss of a young person in a road accident can have on a family.

“This will be a very thought provoking seminar and display and all the young people of the parish who have, or who soon may gain a driving licence, along with their parents are very much encouraged to attend,” said Red Knights club chairman, Gerard Treacy.

Last summer the Red Knights club was hit by two tragic road accidents which claimed the lives of young playing members, Mark McGirr (21) and Cathy Cox (26) in the space of six weeks.  Both Cathy and Mark were connected with members of the Eskra Emmetts club and Claire O’Hagan acknowledged the poignancy of the two neighbouring clubs coming together to arrange this event when she said

“It is my hope that this seminar will highlight the need for everyone and particularly young people to consider their actions when in control or travelling in a vehicle. Neither of our Clubs would wish to go through the grief that engulfed the two parishes on two separate occasions last summer”.

The event will last ninety minutes and refreshments will be served afterwards.

This Road Safety initiative is being promoted by the Tyrone County Board and the Ulster Council GAA.
