Ulster SHC First Round Round-Up

May 10th, 2010

There were few surprises in the Ulster GAA Hurling Senior Championship on Saturday, with Monaghan, Armagh and Tyrone all progressing to the next round.

Monaghan’s progress was not straight forward, however, as Fermanagh gave them a tough game before rallying late on to secure a 1-15 to 2-10 win.

The favourites led by 0-11 to 0-6 at the break, but a Paul McGoldrick goal at the start of the second half and Seán Corrigan’s strike with 10 minutes left on the clock swung the game in the Erne men’s favour.

However, Monaghan got out of jail when Michael McHugh kicked 1-1 in the closing stages to seal their passage to the next round.

Tyrone had no such worries in disposing of Cavan on a 6-24 to 1-14 scoreline at Healy Park, Omagh.

Conor Gurgan was the scorer-in-chief for the home side, netting 3-8 from play. Kevin Downes scored the only goal for the losers.

Armagh started their campaign with an impressive 3-23 to 1-12 win over 13-man Donegal. Rory Gaffney (1-5) and Paul Breen (0-8) were on top form for the Orchard men.

Kevin Campbell hit 1-8 of Donegal’s total before two late Armagh goals, from Gaffney and Ger Enright, sealed the win for their side. Donegal had Justin McGhee and Colm Breathneach sent off.
