As part of the GAA’s 1916 commemorations, Ulster GAA President Michael Hasson recently attended the All- Britain Junior Shield between Hertfordshire & Yorkshire in Frongoch, Wales.
The former internment camp of Frongoch once housed 1800 Irishmen who were interred after the Easter Rising. The internees arranged matches between their respective counties on a field that they named ‘Croke Park’ – a name still used by the Welsh locals today.
In July 1916 it staged a classic match between Louth & Kerry that became known as the ‘All Ireland Behind Barbed Wire’, with the Kerrymen collecting the Wolfe Tone Cup.
One hundred years on, a new, specially commissioned Wolfe Tone Cup trophy was presented to Hertfordshire, after they defeated Yorkshire 3-11 to 1-3.
