St Colman’s win cagey MacRory battle with Cavan
Danske Bank MacRory Cup
St Colman’s Newry 1-11 St Patrick’s Cavan 0-4
Both St Colman’s Newry and St Patrick’s Cavan set up very defensively in this Danske Bank MacRory Cup tie in Middletown yesterday evening – and an interval scoreline of 0-5 to 0-1 was fairly reflective of that with Thomas Travers hitting three of the Newry side’s five points from placed balls.
Ruairí Curran picked off Cavan’s only score of the first 30 minutes and things didn’t really open up during the third quarter either so that entering the last 15 minutes St Colman’s were looking comfortable with a lead of 0-7 to 0-2.
It forced Cavan to come out of their shell a little and suddenly gaps opened in their defence. Indeed St Colman’s created and then missed two excellent goal opportunities before Cian McConville eventually found the net in the 53rd minute to seal the win.
McConville, Jack Docherty and Conor Tierney added points after the goal while Cavan’s return for pushing more players up were late points for Eoghan Brady and Cian McGovern.
