Cavan claims last Rannafast semi spot
Danske Bank Rannafast Cup quarter-final
St Patrick’s Cavan 4-14 Abbey CBS 3-8
Despite the danger posed by John McGovern and the high number of handling and passing errors from both teams there was little chance of St Patrick’s Cavan conceding a 3-7 to 1-6 interval advantage in this never less than interesting Danske Bank Rannafast Cup quarter-final yesterday.
Chris Sambete’s palmed effort on the half-time whistle opened that gap at the break after an entertaining first half of often open, expansive football.
Jack Treanor was first to find the net when, isolated one on one, he rounded his player and fired home with his left foot.
John McGovern came back with a good goal for the Abbey, but Treanor’s free came back off the upright in the 23rd minute and Aaron McManus was quickest to re-act and pick his spot in the net.
After the break, Abbey created several goal chances – but only took one, John McGovern applying an excellent finish to bring the difference down to four points.
Cavan responded with a series of points from Daragh McGurn, Treanor and Michael Veale before a goal from Drew McVerry in the 54th minute once again pulled the difference down to four points.
However Treanor brought his tally to 2-5 soon after and Sean Donohue added a point as St Patrick’s claimed the last semi-final spot and a game on Friday against the other Newry school, St Colman’s.
The first semi-final between favourites and holders St Patrick’s Maghera and St Michael’s Enniskillen goes ahead this (WEDNESDAY) afternoon 2pm in Carrickmore.
St Patrick’s : Jack Treanor 2-5, Aaron McManus 1-0, Christ Sambete 1-0, Darragh McGurn 0-3, Michael Veale 0-2, Sean Donohue 0-2, Fionntán O’Reilly 0-1, Oisin Brady 0-1.
Abbey CBS: John McGovern 2-2, Drew McVerry 1-2, Daragh O’Callaghan 0-3, Caolan Connell 0-1.
