St Macartan’s & St Mary’s play out MacRory draw
Danske Bank MacRory Cup
St Macartan’s Monaghan 1-13 St Mary’s Belfast 2-10
Nothing really was at stake in this game except third and fourth placings in the group. The draw, earned by very late points from Aaron Mohan and Cormac McKenna, was enough to see St Macartan’s take third and line up a game with St Patrick’s Academy.
St Mary’s will be playing St Patrick’s Cavan, but in hindsight they will be ruing the fact that they went in at the break just 1-5 to 0-3 ahead having had the advantage of the strong breeze.
St Macartan’s didn’t score from play in that first half, Aaron Mohan’s accuracy from frees keeping them in the tie.
St Mary’s goal came after 20 minutes with Niall McParland and Matthew Mallon involved in a good move before the ball was played to Dominic McEnhill who dropped the shoulder and fired to the roof of the net.
However St Macartan’s switched midfielder Michael O’Brien to the edge of the square for the second half and he palmed home from Cormac McKenna’s pass in the 39th minute to start an unanswered run of 1-4 over the next seven minutes that edged Monaghan clear.
Paddy Doyle’s goal, quickly followed by a 57th minute point from McEnhill, put St Mary’s back into a two points lead, but they were not able to hold on to it and Mohan and McKenna evened the score as the game went into added time.
St Mary’s : Dominic McEnhill 1-7, 0-3 frees, Paddy Doyle 1-2, Eoin McMenamin 0-1
St Macartan’s : Michael O’Brien 1-1, Aaron Mohan 0-8, 0-5 frees, Cormac McKenna 0-2, Oisin McKenna 0-1, Ronan King 0-1
