Ballyhegan Davitts GFC has become the first GAA club to participate in, and successfully complete, the Action Mental Health (OUR Generation) project, which is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The Ballyhegan volunteers were able to count this programme towards their Joint Award (Gaisce-The President’s Award and Duke of Edinburgh Award).

For the programme, the group of young people partnered with young people from Tamnamore Community Development Association.  Both groups completed the first five sessions at their own facilities with the AMH project leader, who covered aspects of mental health awareness, managing feelings, understanding emotions and exploring perceptions and stereotypes.

Throughout the sessions, the young people participated in activities designed for ‘Provoking Thought’, increasing mental health literacy, enhancing emotional resilience and instilling confidence. The two groups came together for an inter-group workshop as the final session, which was well received by all participants.

The young people did their clubs and families proud by demonstrating great commitment, respect, and potential as young leaders.
