The Ulster GAA Cúchulainn Initiative Blitz recently took place at Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magherafelt, bringing together young people from a wide range of backgrounds to engage in Gaelic games in a vibrant and inclusive environment.
The initiative is designed to introduce Gaelic games to students who may not traditionally participate, while promoting inclusivity, mutual respect, and cultural understanding through sport.
The event featured both boys’ and girls’ competitions, with teams representing 20 schools across Ulster:
Boys’ Competition:
- Bangor: Bangor Academy & Sixth Form College, St Columbanus College
- Dungannon: Integrated College Dungannon, St Patrick’s Academy Dungannon
- Enniskillen: Erne Integrated College, St Joseph’s College
- Ballymena: St Patrick’s College, Slemish College, Dunclug College
Girls Competition
- Lisburn: Forthill Integrated College, St Patrick’s Academy
- Limavady: Limavady High School, Limavady Grammar School, St Mary’s Limavady
- Banbridge: Newbridge Integrated College, Banbridge High, St Patrick’s College Banbridge
- Ballymoney: Dalriada, Ballymoney High School, Our Lady of Lourdes
After an enjoyable and competitive day of games played across three indoor pitches, the Limavady Cúchulainns emerged as winners of the girls’ competition, while the Ballymena Cúchulainns claimed victory in the boys’ competition.

In the lead-up to the blitz, Ulster GAA delivered ‘GAA Taster Sessions’ throughout February and March, engaging over 600 Year 10 and Year 11 students across the 20 participating schools. These sessions provided young people with an introduction to Gaelic games, building confidence and encouraging participation ahead of the event.
In addition, ‘Getting to Know the GAA’ presentations were delivered in each school, promoting a deeper understanding of Gaelic games, Irish culture, and the role of sport in fostering a shared and inclusive future.
Diarmaid Marsden, Head of Club and Community Development at Ulster GAA, praised the enthusiasm and commitment shown by both students and teachers:
“The Cúchulainn Initiative continues to demonstrate the power of sport in bringing young people from our communities together, with the very positive outcome of creating lasting friendships.
I extend my congratulations to the Ballymena and Limavady Cúchulainns on their well-earned victories and thank all participating schools, teachers, and Ulster GAA staff for their invaluable contributions to this initiative.”
